JOHN PROVIAS Obituary

DR. JOHN PETER PROVIAS, Hon. B.Sc., M.D., F.R.C.P.(C) (July 18, 1955 – October 30, 2025) It is with great sadness that the family of Dr. John Peter Provias announces his sudden passing on October 30, 2025, at his cottage on Georgian Bay. John is survived by his mother, Kris Provias; his brothers, James (Deborah) and Michael Provias; his partner, Sheila Dulmage; his nephew, Hayden (Nicole) Provias; and great-nephew, Peter Provias, all who loved him deeply. John was predeceased by his father, Peter John Provias. John grew up in Oakville and had a passion for golfing, skiing, and travel, with numerous family adventures that he shared with his two brothers, and parents, crossing all parts of Canada. He was a successful academic and an alumnus of Western University, the University of Toronto, and McMaster University. During this time, he earned a Bachelor of Science (Honours), Doctor of Medicine, and is a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians in Neuropathology. John built a distinguished career spanning over three decades, as a neuropathologist with Hamilton Health Sciences and McMaster University, where he served as an Associate Professor in the Department of Pathology & Molecular Medicine. The focus of his tenure was broad, encompassing diagnostic, clinical, and forensic services, as well as research and teaching. As a man of many passions, John was a true collector, loved architecture and design which he actively pursued, and was an enthusiastic traveller with an archeological mind and a heart for adventure. He loved spending time on Georgian Bay, with cottage projects, boating, and kayaking. The cottage was and will always be his place of peace and tranquility. John will be remembered for his unwavering dedication to his field; his mentorship and contributions to medicine; his curiosity and infectious sense of adventure; for all the unique design concepts he incorporated into his homes; the highly sought out and often eccentric additions to his collections; and for his deep love for those closest to him. His presence will be profoundly missed by his family, friends, colleagues, and students. A celebration of John's life will be held at Kopriva Taylor Funeral home in Oakville on November 15, 2025, from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations to advance ongoing research may be made in his memory through the Hamilton Health Sciences Foundation https://hamiltonhealth.ca/ways-to-give/today/.
