John RICKER Obituary

JOHN CARMAN RICKER John died August 7, 2022, after a long illness and a remarkable life during which he had a significant influence on the people and institutions he touched. Professor Emeritus, University of Toronto. Member of the Order of Canada: "John Ricker transformed how Canadian history was taught in the second half of the 20th century. Building on his experience as a secondary school teacher, he wrote or edited more than a dozen school textbooks that engaged students by combining up-to-date scholarship content with an entertaining style. Notably, How Are We Governed? has become a classic text. Also a beloved mentor, he went on to become the Dean of the University of Toronto's Faculty of Education, where he contributed to the development of generations of Ontario teachers." Certificate of Recognition awarded by the Minister of Veteran Affairs for his "selfless acts of service and sacrifice during the Second World War, in defending Canada and our shared values of freedom, democracy and the rule of law." The patriarch of a loving family who adored him: his beloved wife of 44 years, Marvi Ricker; his daughters, Catherine Whittaker, Judith Brown (Gordon) and Martha Ricker (George); grandchildren, John (Mandy), Anthony (Jenna) and Sarah (Chris) Whittaker; Matthew (Mallory), Cameron (Amy) and Kathleen (Ryan) Brown; Allison (Chris) and Stephen Phillips; 11 great-grandchildren; his nieces and nephews, Jane Morley, Mathew, Christine and Andrew Heinola. For thy sweet love remember'd such wealth brings that then I scorn to change my state with kings. (Shakespearean Sonnet XXIX.) A Celebration of John's Life will occur in the coming months. Dearest Marvi, I am so sorry, if not surprised to learn of John's passing. I hope he went easily and peacefully. I am now in Amsterdam - Elizabeth Wilson just sent me the lovely obituary. I'll be back in Toronto early September and will be in touch with you directly then. Warmest regards, Monica

I will remember John with fondness and appreciation, including times when he occasionally included me in his family gatherings. Our periodic long lunches were always a banquet of wide ranging intellectual stimulations. It was easy to even find myself mildly intimidated at times when enjoying his facility with language and debate. To me, he always had a larger than life presence; he definitely made an impact on how I chose to live my life.

I started Riverdale Collegiate in 1960 and Mr. Ricker was my history teacher in either grade 9 or 10 (can't remember which now). My best subjects were Eng. Lit and Eng. Comp. I didn't particulary enjoy Geography or History, but once in Mr. Ricker's class I looked forward to history. He was really funny and made history interesting and he was such a nice person. I still didn't excel in History but I did pass it. I still have good memories of his classes and I know my classmates felt the same. Mr. Ricker really did have a remarkable life, and he will be missed. I send my condolences to his family and wish them well.
Sincerely,
Loretta Pringle nee Furness

Dear Marvi,
I'm so very sorry for your loss. Although I never knew John, he must have been an incredible man. The 2 of you have done so much for others in your own ways, how wonderful that you were able to share your gifts and talents.

I was in grade 9 at Riverdale CI in 1961-62 and I knew of Mr. Ricker, but he was not my history teacher. Then he left the school. When I learned of his passing, I forwarded the sad news to a very large number of RCI Alumni. Today, I have been the recipient of so many accolades regarding him and what a wonderful teacher he was. I wanted to let the family know that even after all these years, his former students recall him as one of the best.

A very memorable teacher of history at Riverdale. Was so glad to have been in his sphere even when he threw chalk.
