John ROBERTSON Obituary

REVEREND DR. JOHN CLIFFORD ROBERTSON February 27, 1936 - December 2, 2021 In the season of Advent, John made a peaceful transition to reunite with his Creator, and beloved friends and family after a prolonged battle with Type I Diabetes and Dementia. Born in Fort Worth, Texas, to a family of educators steeped in the Methodist tradition, John found community at church as well as on the playing fields where he excelled at sports. Through education he sought to reconcile his intellectual and spiritual callings in his study of philosophy and theology. His journey led him from Texas Wesleyan College to Southern Methodist University, followed by a year of pastoral ministry, then to Yale University where he earned his PhD in philosophical theology. After a brief period teaching in Missouri, he accepted a position in 1968 with the newly established Department of Religious Studies at McMaster University. He was a passionate teacher who left a deep impact on students and colleagues alike. John met Joan at Yale Divinity School, married in 1965, and raised two sons in Dundas, Ontario, with many summer visits to family and friends in Texas and Tennessee, and several formative years on sabbatical leave in Tübingen, Germany. He was a bridge builder who could reach across divides, a gracious partner in conversation, a story-teller and joker with a twinkle in his eye, and a supporter of social justice from civil rights sit-ins in the 60s to LGBTQ rights in the 90s. He loved the arts, biking on country roads, throwing a football, meditating, communing with nature and spending time with his grandchildren. Throughout his life, he remained devoted to his younger brother. Pre-deceased by parents John C. and Thelma Robertson, he is survived by Joan, his beloved wife of 56 years, sons Eric Robertson (Holly) and Mark Robertson (Jonathan), grandchildren Wesley and Anna, brother Arthur Robertson in Fort Worth, and Joan's sister Deen (David) Logan and family in Franklin, Tennessee. We are grateful to the dedicated caregivers at Shalom Village. Cremation followed a private family gathering on December 10, 2021. A service of remembrance will be held in the spring. Donations in lieu of flowers to: St. Mark's United Church, Dundas (e-transfer: [email protected]), or Wesley.ca. 'In life, in death, in life beyond death, God is with us. We are not alone.'

I was a neighbour of John and Joan for a number of years, until June 1992, and one of the strongest memories of him is the aroma of his barbeques on the back porch; he loved to burn hickory when cooking there, which wafted a wonderful warm atmosphere into our back yard next door. He said it was Texas and Tennessee tradition. All the comments in his obituary are right on; he was a gentle, engaging fellow who, in conversation, always strived for harmony and agreement via his slow Texas drawl, so lovely here in Canada where we tend to speak quick and sharp. Condolences to Joan, Eric and Mark, who must miss him tremendously. Wonderful memories.

Joan, I am so very sorry to hear about John's death. I have so many wonderful memories of classes with him and gatherings at your house. He was a very kind man and a good teacher. Mostly I remember with great gratitude the example he gave me of the way in which intellectual study could be integrated with a deep faith. May he rest in peace and rise in glory, Erin

Joan our thoughts are with you. We loved catching up and sharing stories as he walked around Brentwood. Always a pleasant and loving man. We were so thrilled that you and John were involved in all the Clarke's weddings. He will be missed by many.

Dr. Robertson was my professor in the 80's at McMaster University during the year that I was completing my Honours BA in Comparative Religious Studies. He was a gentleman and a wonderful teacher. He truly engaged with his students in and out of the classroom. I remember a large group of graduate students and undergraduate students went for a walk with Dr. Robertson along the Bruce Trail in Dundas on a gorgeous, colourful and crisp fall day. After our hike, we were invited back to his home where his lovely wife, Joan, had made a huge batch of chili and cornbread. It was the first time I had ever eaten cornbread, and it was delicious. A group of us also travelled to Quebec to a Benedictine Monastery - St. Benoit du Lac - and then to a Benedictine Convent in Vermont. It was a beautiful trip, visually and spiritually. I will always remember his goodness, kindness and exuberance, which made the learning experience more meaningful and wonderful. I will miss his warmth and his brilliant smile. God Bless you, Dr. Robertson; you really contributed so much to those of us who were lucky enough to have you as a teacher. You taught us so much more than what books had to offer.
