JOHN ROBINSON Obituary

(1941 – 2026) On March 1, 2026, John passed away unexpectedly, after several years of decreasing health. John was born in Toronto on April 20, 1941, and grew up and went to school in Edmonton, Winnipeg, and Toronto. He attended the University of Western Ontario, receiving a BA and an MA in History. He attended University College, University of London, England, where he did PhD studies (incomplete) in History. John joined the Canadian government in 1968 as a member of the Department of External Affairs (now Global Affairs Canada). As well as working in Ottawa, he served overseas in Geneva, Switzerland; Kingston, Jamaica (twice); and Abidjan, Ivory Coast. Among his assignments were two years as Canadian Executive Director at the African Development Fund (1977-79) and Deputy Director of the division dealing with Economic Relations in Developing Countries in 1979-80 and again in 1981. After working on the Ottawa Economic Summit (September 1980 - July 1981), first as Director of Plans and Liaison and later as Director for Media Relations, John joined the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) in November 1981 as Senior Country Program Director, Americas Branch, with specific responsibility for Canada's aid program in the Caribbean. From August 1985 to August 1993, he was Vice-President of the Americas Branch. He was subsequently the Vice-President, Policy Branch of CIDA, from September 1993 to August 1999. From 1999 to 2003, John was the Canadian High Commissioner in Jamaica, with concurrent accreditation as High Commissioner to the Commonwealth of the Bahamas, and Belize. This was a posting that he loved and where he developed a close circle of friends. John retired from Jamaica to Vancouver, BC, in 2003, where he continued his public service involvement, serving on several boards, and where again he developed a close community of friends and former colleagues. He loved music and theatre and was a strong supporter of the Vancouver Opera and the Stratford Festival. Predeceased by his sister, Jane, he will be sadly missed by his sister, Nancy (Jeff); his brother, Sandy; and many friends and colleagues in Canada and around the globe. John spent his last few years at Amica Lions Gate Seniors Lifestyles in West Vancouver, where he received wonderful care. In keeping with John's wishes, there will be no funeral service. If desired, donations may be made to the Alzheimer Society.

I am deeply saddened to learn of John's passing. We shared common history during our careers in Foreign Affairs. We were both born in 1941 and both began our service abroad in Geneva. In 2000, I joined him in at the Canadian High Commission in Jamaica for what was to be our last assignment abroad.
From the day we first met in Geneva in 1970 to our farewell in 2003, he always displayed a level of politeness few possess. He was a perfect gentleman at all times and a perfectionist in all he undertook. We never met again in person but we did keep in touch with Xmas cards and annual letters, a feature of his personality which was so endearing. My wife and I will miss him immensely. Rest in peace John.

I worked with John for almost all of his years as Vice President of Policy Branch. He made a huge impression on me, personally and professionally. I was always amazed at how the could keep multiple balls in the air at one time, switch between them at a moment's notice without the slightest hesitation. and never miss a beat. Extraordinary! John was demanding, but in the best possible way. He expected good, hard work from his officers, but even more from himself, which made us admire him all the more and rise to the occasion - our best. On a personal level, he was there unfailingly for me through two very difficult personal transitions - a divorce and the death of a partner. I always knew he would support me and that meant the world to me. He remained the gold standard for excellence and decency in a senior public official for me and throughout my career. An impressive and decent man, and I am so much the better for having known him. He influences me to this day. I am sad to hear of his passing and send my condolences to his family. A wonderful man.

John and his siblings were as close to me as any family members. Through my years in Toronto there was always a place at their Sunday dinner table for me and if desert happened to be 'Old Purse', that was indeed something special...! To Sandy and Nancy, my sincere sympathies. I have early stage myself so my contribution today to the Society has double meaning. God bless.....!

I was saddened to hear of John's passing. We spent much time together at our cottage in Algonquin Park when John was on his annual trip east from Vancouver to visit friends and family, and to attend the Stratford Festival. A kind man who will be missed by my family as well as myself.
