Dear Maritta, Sam, Nathan and Joe,
We are very sad to hear of John's passing. He is remembered as a fun, kind and generous person. His storytelling at dinners when the hockey team was participating in tournaments were always a highlight of so many good times. We also have happy memories of the weekend at your cottage on Balsam Lake, when not only the hockey team was invited, but the parents and siblings were included as well.
At this time we hope there is comfort in knowing so many care. Our sincere sympathy,

Our family is so very sad to hear of John’s passing. A giant among men as a father, husband, friend and ‘coach’ in every sense to children, particularly boys. A kind and exceptionally generous man, with that distinctive laugh which would get everyone around him laughing too! So many fun memories for our and other Unionville families at hockey games, baseball games, team parties at the Rothwell home. Gone much too soon but never to be forgotten.

John was a legacy in the Canadian wealth management industry. The story I tell many about John is it didn’t matter who or what was delivered at corporate events. The only comments I ever received post an event was from those who had the opportunity to shake hands with John. His knack for instant connection was an art! I will miss you friend.

We would like to offer our sincere condolences to Marita and her family on the loss of her beloved John gone way too soon. We knew John through our time at York Downs and also through our Church. We know he was loved by many and his lost will be felt deeply. May he rest in peace and may his memory be a blessing.

John was a client of mine in the early 2000’s. He was one of the kindest, and most decent people I had the pleasure of working with in the business. I was really sad to read about his passing in the Globe and Mail, and am sorry for your big loss. Glad to know he could spend his final months at the cottage, in a place he loved, with family.

The designated long hitter on our York Downs field day team. Always the life of the group. Always a twinkle in his eye. We will miss that, John, and your eternal optimism. Thanks for sharing a piece of your life with all of us over the years. You made us all richer for the experience of you.

Our family was deeply saddened to hear this news. Our hearts go out to Maritta and all the family. We will have many happy memories of time spent together at the arena with the Rothwell family while John regaled us all with his humorous anecdotes. We hope your own cherished memories of John and the knowledge of the wonderful legacy he leaves behind will sustain you through this difficult time.
May his memory be eternal.

I attended LCVI with John from 1970-73 and will remember him as a stellar athlete—skiing, basketball, volleyball, track and field—but will also remember him as a genuinely thoughtful person. Our paths last crossed in the late 1990s in the Pearson Airport. Waiting for my flight back to Yellowknife, I heard, “Sandy? Sandy McAuley?” We only had a few minutes to chat, but his humour and enthusiasm were as infectious as ever. My deepest condolences to all those who will miss him.
