John SEYCHUK Obituary

JOHN LAURENCE SEYCHUK June 25, 1931 - December 9, 2021 With heavy hearts, we bid farewell to John Laurence Seychuk, who passed away the evening of Thursday, December 9, 2021. John leaves behind his loving wife, Vera; his son John Paul (Diane and children Dmitri and Liza) and daughter Carolyn Rose; his sister Mary Kokolski (her husband Peter, deceased, her son Gerald, deceased, Alan and Diane); his brother Orest (Marion); his stepchildren Darlene Kindiak, Christine Kindiak-Pare, deceased, Mitchell, deceased and their children (Chantal, Laska, Nicholas and Douglas), Raymond Kindiak, Michael Kindiak (Wendy and children Daniel and Natalie); and Gregory Kindiak (Connie and children Sophia and Laura). John was predeceased by his first wife Luba (Lovey), by his brother William and by his parents Paul and Olga. John was born on June 25, 1931, near Dauphin, Manitoba, where he attended grade school in a one-room school while working on the family farm through high school. Upon graduating from the University of Manitoba in Civil Engineering in 1954, he received the prestigious British Athlone Fellowship Scholarship to undertake post-graduate studies in England and was awarded the Diploma of Imperial College (DIC). Returning to Canada in 1956, John joined Geocon in Montreal and shortly thereafter, was transferred to Toronto. Several years later, he co-founded a new geotechnical firm (Golder Associates) specializing in geo-engineering and related consulting services. He held numerous senior positions including Principal, President and Chairman of the Board. He provided technical and business management expertise on a range of geotechnical engineering projects in all parts of the globe, including a 2-year residency in Australia with his young family in the early 1970's. Upon retirement in 1996, John continued an association with Golder as a senior consultant and also continued to provide his mentorship. Over the years, John was active in a number of engineering professional societies, as President of both the Engineering Institute of Canada (EIC) and the Canadian Geotechnical Society (CGS) and as the North American Vice President of the International Society of Geotechnical Engineering (ISGE). He was a recipient of several engineering related fellowships, awards and medals. He was awarded the Canadian Pacific Engineering (EIC) Medal, John B. Stirling Medal, the prestigious Robert F. Leggett Medal and the Governor General's 125th Anniversary of Canada Commemorative Medal for Community Service. John was also active in the Ukrainian community and other organizations. He was a founding member of the St. Demetrius Ukrainian Catholic Church Parish in Toronto. He served as Chairman and President of the St. Demetrius Development Corporation spearheading the construction of this Ukrainian community's church, school, seniors' residence and nursing home. He was an avid supporter and sponsor of community youth softball teams and was a charter member of the Knights of Columbus Sheptytsky Council. He also served as a panel member of the Toronto Police Services Tribunal. In his later years, John loved to get away to his hobby farm 'Stonehedge' near Markdale. He enjoyed getting on his tractor to work the land and continue to build his stone hedge. Big Bad John will be missed by many. As John would always sign off - 'Peace'. Although I was only at Golder for a short time I fondly remember John coming in and sharing a joke. It was special to see him still interested in what was happening and offering sage counsel when called for. I often wonder what his thoughts really were on the last 3-4 years though. John your work here is done, now it´s time to rest peacefully. Go with God.

I'm a former Golder employee who John dubbed me "The Dolly Man" because I looked after the mailroom & mail runs through the halls when there were two buildings.
I would like to send my condolences to Vera, who kindly gave my wife and I a "pysanka" (Ukrainian painted Easter Egg) as I am of Ukrainian background.
Here's to John, a man of conviction, a pioneer in the Geotechnical field and was a giant of a man.

I have fond memories of Big John from his days in Australia in 1972-73 - he certainly kept us on the straight and narrow!

John was bigger than life. He was fun to talk to and learn the history of Golder. He nicknamed me "Mark Anthony" when we first met to which I called him as "Caesar". He will be missed. Take care and Peace!

It is with great sadness that Louise and I heard of John's passing. I remember the fun times we had together. Life got in the way of our keeping in touch the last few years. I remember John's down-to-earth financial wisdom that benefitted Golders from day one.

John was
Passionately involved in everything he did
Blunt as a hammer
Never an observer - always a participant
A big man with a bigger heart
He will be sorely missed

Vera and family. I learned so much from Big Bad John (I first wrote his name as simply John, but I know he would have corrected me). I was one of the many Golder Johns (Black John, Rock John, Long John...) With my left hand and lack of a middle initial, I became Young John "L". He even inserted the "L" onto the signature line of a report that I wrote with him! I am sure that all of us who worked at Golder felt a little more secure and confident in our engineering work knowing that BBJ was in our corner if something unexpected happened.

I met John in my early days at Golder, 1990. He was larger than life and at first, scared the bejesus out of me when he walked in the room and I could hear him coming before he appeared. He always had a good word to say about everything. Later, after I moved on from Mississauga, I would return for meetings that John also attended. John would always take a few minutes to chat with me about a few topics. What I remember most and what sticks with me today is that he always asked my how I was and how the family was doing. As I look back, that is what the Golder culture was built on, mutual respect, caring, integrity - It was our Founding Fathers that instilled this into us, we are Golder as John was Golder. Rest in Peace BB John!!

When I joined Golder in the 2000s, John's office was down the hall. Having him there, talking to him about projects, and sharing continuity made me feel part of a more than just a company.
Many thanks for that.
