John SHELLY Obituary

It is with tremendous sadness that we announce the passing of John Burton Shelly on June 21, 2024, at age 75. John is survived by his children Tanis (Kevin), Leah (Farzad), Jason (Aly), and Kyle; treasured grandchildren Luke, Jake, and Isla; and his wife of 48 years, Carol. John leaves behind an indelible legacy that includes his passion for helping others, his love of sports and music, and above all, his devotion to his family, which inspired all who knew him. John was one of the first graduates of Rosseau Lake College and went on to teach water and snow skiing at Limberlost Lodge, eventually turning pro and entertaining the crowds at the CNE Water Ski Show, Aquarama. From there he built a career in the hospitality industry, working at many of the finest hotels and eventually landing in a role that was made for him at TD Bank. It is there where he made an impact on the lives of many as a fixture on the 54th floor. His hospitality and desire to care for people made everyone he met feel important. John's passion for serving others extended to his work with Moorelands Kids, helping to empower children of all socio-economic backgrounds realize their potential. John led fundraising efforts for over 25 years, collectively raising over $1 million, and had the honour to serve as president of the board. Although John made all those around him feel important, his happiest, most cherished priority was his family. Lovingly known as Gogo to his grandchildren, his boundless energy for his family knew no limits. He always found the time to coach teams, cheer on sidelines, and drive friends home. He loved waking up early to make everyone coffee and go on morning missions for the daily newspaper, warm bagels, or farm fresh eggs. He coached every sport under the sun from hockey to lacrosse and loved downhill skiing; teaching even his grandsons his signature "follow me" down the hill. Many memories were made with family and friends at Cedar Point, a place that meant so much to him over the years. John was happiest spending time with his wife Carol, whom he adored. Their relationship, based on mutual respect, kindness, and unconditional love, continues to inspire. His was a life full of love and truly well lived. The family will receive friends at the Humphrey Funeral Home A.W. Miles – Newbigging Chapel, 1403 Bayview Avenue (south of Davisville) for a memorial service from 11 a.m. on Wednesday, June 26. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in memory of John Shelly to Moorelands Kids (https://www.moorelands.ca/). Condolences may be forwarded through www.humphreymiles.com.

John was such a special person. I had the pleasure of working with John his last couple of years and got to plan his retirement (ok, let´s be honest, take John´s plan and implement it!). The world has lost a kind soul who would do anything for his family. My thoughts are with all of you.

Seems like yesterday he was set to retire and embark on an Alaskan cruise. Passionate about people and service. Beloved for his storytelling and fine attention to detail. Historian and preserver of the mid-century modern marvel, we know as TD54. He will be missed.

So saddened by the news, for John was such a gentleman!
I would always enjoy walking our "four legged friends" together in the valley and we would always share great memories together of our families, the community of Leaside and our love of RLC!

John and I crossed paths at TD where he helped me with many Second Harvest events. He too felt strongly about their work so it was a joy to plan the events with him. Recently I was fortunate to sit and reminisce at the TD Retiree luncheon. John was greeted by dozens of folks, all with warm stories of their time together. We heard all about his family and retirement. He was still a busy man.
We have all lost a great friend.

I was lucky to work with John at TD. His kindness and commitment to superior service were legendary. No one could match his standards during a site visit! John inspired all who had the good luck to work with him, and made each of us feel special. From Victoria to New York, and many, many events on 54, I am blessed to have so many special memories of John. My deepest sympathies to his loved ones. Know that while he dedicated so much of himself at the office, he absolutely sparkled anytime he spoke of you. I will cherish his memory.

Sincerest condolences to Mrs. Shelly and the Shelly family on the passing of John. As an Executive Assistant at TD, I always found John to be most friendly, kind, and accommodating whenever I booked one of the dining rooms. Many years later, he also went all out for our Retired Executives Office annual Christmas Luncheon on the 54th Floor. A true gentleman.
