John TURNER Obituary

DR. JOHN JAMES TURNER MD, FRCPC The life John loved came to an end in the early morning of April 27, 2022. The people most cherished in John's life were his family: his wife, Maureen; his sons, Marcus (wife Brenda, children Lauren and Alex), Greg (wife Kim, children Shelby and Wyatt), Zachary (wife Linda); and his daughter, Gretchen (husband Clark, children Maggie and Quinn). John had a vast network of friends that he loved and admired, and colleagues that he deeply respected. He rarely let any member of his network go, making sure to keep in touch with everyone. He enjoyed a rich professional life, practicing medicine until a week before the end of his life. John also initiated the TWH Journal Club, which enriched his knowledge of the profession he so enjoyed. John's hobbies of choir, violin, mandolin, piano, gardening, journaling, reading, jewelry making, and travelling kept him busy and introduced him to many contacts who became dear friends. Journaling his many trips kept his memories of both the places he'd been and the people he met fresh at hand. With multitudes of interests, John was also a spiritual man who enjoyed studying the Bible. Everything John did, he did with exuberance and joy. He loved to say, "it doesn't get any better than this!", and he lived every day of his life trying to prove himself wrong. A Celebration of Life will be held at the University of Toronto Faculty Club, 41 Willcocks St, during the hours of 1:30 - 4:00 p.m. Wednesday, May 4. In lieu of flowers, donations are welcome to the charity of your choice, or to the Dermatology Department at Toronto Western Hospital, which can be made through the Herbert Haberman Dermatology Endowment at (416) 603-5800 ext.5300.

As I retired in 2019, and was away from Toronto this year until late May, I only became aware of John's death upon receiving an invitation to the Turner Memorial Journal Club. I am so saddened by John's passing and wanted to express my condolences to Maureen and John's family. John was truly a Renaissance man: bright, curious, cultured, kind and humble, with so many interests. He clearly loved his dermatology practice, his patients and his colleagues and was an outstanding organiser and leader of the Toronto Western Journal Club. He was so warm, sincere and had such a wonderful sense of humour. It was a pleasure and privilege to have known John, as he truly touched and enriched the lives of all who knew him. Colette

My deepest condolences. I am so sorry for your loss. Although I was only a patient, I felt like a friend. Dr. Turner will be truly missed. He was so kind and caring. I loved that he would make jokes always having me leave with a smile. Even as I think of him now I know he would want me to smile. I was very fortunate to have known him.

Sincere expressions of sympathy to the Turner Family. We have not met but I just now heard of John´s passing. I first met John as a U of T medical student in the 70´s at TWH while doing a rotation in Dermatology. He was a wonderful teacher. We examined a pt with the worst case of scabies... I will never forget that encounter! This past winter, I joined the Toronto Physician´s Chamber Choir & met John again. It was so encouraging to have him in the choir... I have always been involved in music ( violin, piano etc) but had not been able to sing since my own daughter´s sudden post partum passing ( she was an Ob/Gyne) just 4 years ago this summer. I ventured out by joining the Chorale & really appreciated his singing & support.
A truly amazing man.He will be missed!
