JOHN RODNEY WACHSMUTH

Rod Wachsmuth died peacefully on May 3, 2025, surrounded by those he loved. Rod was predeceased by his parents John and Phyllis. He is survived by his sister, Jane, his sons David (Esmé) and Jeffrey (Stephanie), his nephew Michael, and his nieces Sarah and Rebecca. Rod adored his grandchildren Max, Molly, Ian, and Jacob. He also had a special bond with his close-knit and lifelong friends Paul and Sandra, Rick, Greg, Brian, and Ron, among others. Born in London, Ontario, Rod moved around for much of his childhood, calling cities such as Montreal and Windsor home before returning in his adolescence to London, where he made his closest friends. After graduating from the University of Toronto with a degree in Physiology and attending medical school at Memorial University in Newfoundland, he returned to Toronto for residency training in Psychiatry before joining the Hospital for Sick Children, where he ran the inpatient Psychiatry ward and helped found the eating disorders program. As a psychiatrist, he touched the lives of hundreds of patients and families. Rod met the world around him with a perpetual sense of curiosity and wonder. His humour, warmth, and compassion were infectious. He read widely, thought deeply, and always had a fascinating perspective to share in any discussion. He was the best father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend you could ask for. The family will receive friends and loved ones at the Humphrey Funeral Home A.W. Miles – Newbigging Chapel, 1403 Bayview Avenue (south of Davisville Avenue) on Wednesday, May 14, 2025, from 10:00 - 11:00 a.m., followed by a Celebration of Life service at 11:00 am.
