(1921 2012) Passed away peacefully on Saturday, February 18, 2012 at the Collingwood General and Marine Hospital shortly after his 91st birthday. Survived by his loving wife Sheila (Hiller), children Heather, Ian, Douglas and Martha (Christopher Skelton) and four grandchildren Patrick, Jonathan, Hannah Skelton and Madison Whitton. Deeply missed by his sisters Gay Reasbeck, Robin Lake, Linda Whitton, and Elizabeth Wiggins. Predeceased by his siblings Frank Whitton, Greta McCutcheon, Mary Saunders, Patricia Fleet and Corbett Whitton. John was born in Hamilton, Ontario and attended Grey Gables and Hillfield School. When WWII broke out John enlisted in the Canadian Army. Following Officers training, he was posted overseas in 1941. He served in the Royal Canadian Armoured Corps with the Fort Garry Horse in Canada and England and with the Kings Own Calgary Regiment where he served for the remainder of the war in Italy and North West Europe, achieving the rank of Major. After the war, John returned to Canada and studied at University of Toronto. He worked in marketing and sales for Canadian Resins and Dominion Bridge among others. John was an avid sportsman and longtime member of the R.C.Y.C. and the Oakville Club. He was passionate about sailing, skiing and tennis. In their retirement years John and Sheila enjoyed travelling with friends and spending summers in McGregor Bay. As patriarch, family was his greatest pride. Special thanks to Dr. O'Halloran, Dr. Poyner, the nursing staff at the Collingwood General and Marine Hospital and his personal caregivers Sarah, Stephanie, Anita, Dorothy and Rene. A memorial service will be held on Friday, February 24 at All Saints Anglican Church, 32 Elgin Street, Collingwood, at 1:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Salvation Army or the Collingwood General & Marine Hospital would be appreciated.
