JON CREIGHTON Obituary

Born in Swift Current, Saskatchewan, October 1, 1935. Died in Toronto, Ontario, April 3, 2025, peacefully, after a lengthy illness. Jon leaves behind his loving wife of 64 years, Carol; his nephew, Christopher; and his niece, Amy, and their families. Jon was also close to his brother-in-law, Bob Torrens and his wife, Sherry, and their three daughters. Jon met Carol when they were part of the first class at the University of Western Ontario Law School. Jon went on to have a long career as general counsel and corporate secretary of Kodak Canada Limited. Jon was a cat lover, having been the servant to many over the years. He was also an audiophile, an opera buff, and an enthusiastic theatregoer both in Toronto and Sarasota. A gifted raconteur, he honed his favourite stories over many repetitions! He will be sadly missed by his many friends, both in Toronto and at their second home in Sarasota. Many thanks to the staff at Home Instead and on the Oncology floor of St. Michael's Hospital for their care of Jon during his final months. A small family funeral is planned.

As the days and weeks pass, and as you return to life's routine, may you continue to feel comforted by the love and support of family and friends.
I knew Jon through Kodak in its heyday and it was a delightful treat to know Jon. Whenever you went to see him, you knew you were going to learn but, most of all, you knew that you were going to leave with a smile on your face because you were going to have some laughs. That's what I will always remember about Jon. You were going to have a few laughs. Jon loved life. My condolences to Jon's family. He will be missed.

I never saw Jon without a smile. He said to me "Doug your job in customer service is to keep us out of court". He was such a nice man.

As the Environmental Director for Kodak for many years I had the opportunity to contact Jon on several occasions with "issues". Jon was always interested in my direct engineering approach to the issue at hand and I in turn was appreciative of Jon´s legal guidance. RIP Jon.

Working for Jon was a challenge, but only in the beginning, mainly due to my lack of knowledge of anything legal.
However very soon he turned out to be a wonderful teacher.
He encouraged me and gave me the confidence to take on more and more responsibilities over time and I learned to love my job.
Of course his "stories" would be especially welcome on some stressful days.
Over time Jon´s Legal Dept. grew in size and he became General Counsel.
After 30 years Jon retired in 2000 but members of his legal team continued to enjoy getting together with Jon & Carol once or twice every year.

Jon both influenced and inspired me with his almost infantile sense of curiosity. It's part of what made him such an interesting human being. I have very fond memories the time I spent with Jon. Sincerest condolences Carol.

Jon and Carol were great friends of my father Bernie Calder, who passed nearly one year ago. I remember many times getting together with Jon and Carol for theatre and musical productions. Jon was a great story telling. I will miss his sense of humour. My thoughts are with Carol during this difficult time. He will be missed. Your friend Aaron Calder

Dear Carol, how you will miss him! So shall we all. The world is a lot less comical now that he with his wittiness of being is gone. Sincere condolences from Daphne Beauroy

Jon was a remarkable man who made a lasting impact on my life. As a young lawyer, uncertain about my future in the profession, I was incredibly fortunate that Jon took me under his wing after I left a law firm job. He welcomed me as his articling student and introduced me to the world of in-house legal practice with warmth, humour, and genuine care. Jon was witty, bright, humble and endlessly generous with his time and wisdom.

He mentored me both personally and professionally, and I grew immensely because of his guidance. He never hesitated to offer honest feedback-sometimes blunt, always insightful-but it was delivered with such humour, kindness, and encouragement that I always felt supported, never judged. He pushed me to be better, and he always had my back. I was often the audience for-and occasionally the subject of-his legendary storytelling, which was as entertaining as it was instructive!

I owe my legal career to Jon. He believed in me at a time when I wasn´t sure I believed in myself. Jon taught me what it means to be a great general counsel, a boss, mentor and leader. He set the gold standard. Like many things in life, we don´t appreciate what we have until we don´t have them anymore. I very quickly learnt this lesson after leaving Kodak and experiencing other workplaces.

Jon holds a special place in my heart, and I will always be deeply grateful for his mentorship, his trust, and his friendship.

Rest in peace, Jon.
