JONATHAN CRINION Obituary

July 17, 1953 - March 15, 2025 With great sadness, the family of Jonathan Crinion announces his passing in Devon, England. Proud and loving father of Jennifer Crinion and Zoe Crinion; Grampa Vovô to Jasper; and beloved older brother to Diana, Joanna and the late Roger Crinion, he will be greatly missed. Jonathan was born in Liverpool, grew up in Ottawa and attended OCA in Toronto. He established himself as a prominent industrial designer with dozens of international award-winning designs, including his iconic Gazelle Chair. In his fifties, he returned to the UK and earned a master's degree at Schumacher College, and later a PhD at the University of Exeter. Jonathan will be remembered for his curiosity, charisma, creativity and his passion for sailing, the ocean and ecology. He was absolutely distraught leaving this world after a short but incredibly tough battle with cancer. We wish him peace and eternal serenity sailing. The Crinion family wishes to extend gratitude to the exceptionally caring and compassionate staff at Torbay Hospital and at Rowcroft Hospice in Devon, UK. A celebration of life will take place in Warkworth, Ontario, in late spring

I heard Jonathan speak at Sheridan college in the 90´s
What a cool guy
He inspired me to follow a career in design.

My sympathies to Jonathan's family. I worked with Jonathan as young designer on a furniture project for knoll. He taught me so much of how I think about design now. I foundlynrember sitting around a table sketching with him, and watching as his fountain pen bled ink down his fingers. He would tell me the hassle of maintaining an old tool is well worth the pleasure it provides, and I've used fountain pens for sketching ever since...some 30 years later. I have very found memories of working with Jonathan, an inspiration, mentor and friend. Love be with him.

Dear Diana and Joanna,

I had just been thinking, a few weeks ago,how nice it would be to have a conversation with Jonathan after all these years, to reflect on our relationship. The good and the bad and the lessons we learned from it all over time. Such a creative soul. There were some fun times.

I googled to see if he was in England or in Toronto and found instead his obituary! I was very sad to see this.

I am so very sorry for your loss and wish you and all the Crinions well.
Love, Sandi Eggleton

Years ago Jonathan had a sailboat beside us at Outer Harbour Marina in Toronto .He told tales, true I am sure, of racing around Newfoundland where the crew cut the handles off their tooth brushes to lighten the boat. I had an inspiration today to look him up only to discover his very sad passing.. Jonathan will remain one of the most remarkable and talented characters in my life

Jonathan was our backyard fence neighbour, in Manor Park, Ottawa, in the 1950s. I'd say he and I were pretty much best friends, playing Roy Rogers and Dale Evans with our
snazzy guns and extremely cool cowboy hats.
I'm devastated to hear that such a bright spark has gone out. Even after all this time, I remember him with great fondness. Even as a little boy, he was a lovely soul: kind and creative. We always had fun. I followed his career as a designer and was so impressed with the work that he did.
It sounds like he had the best of all possible families and I send you all my love.
We have one of those odd Spring
snow storms tonight, where I now live in New Brunswick...and I will think of him, out in the wonder of it all. Rest peacefully.

I can´t quite believe that someone as vibrant as Jonathan is no longer on this earth. He was one of my closest friends in high school [Lisgar days]. I will miss not being able to reach out to him, or hear from him out of the blue - so earnest, such a beautiful writer and thinker. I´m even more grateful now that we had a later in life full decade of correspondence to catch up and now to reread and hear his voice in his letters. I will miss his brilliant creative mind, his kind heart and wild ideas. He was a good friend to me, a soul friend. I am thinking of his dear Liz, Jeannie, and girls Jennifer and Zoe, sisters Diana and Joanna, who he always spoke of with reverence and love.

I will always remember Jonathan´s kindness to me when I first arrived in Canada (30 years ago) when I was working in a shared studio space with Debbie Adams. We first started talking about dentists - I needed one and he had a great one ( one I still go to see today) and that struck up a friendship which extended beyond work to his then wife Lizzie and his two little girls Jennifer and Zoe. I greatly admired Jonathan´s talent in design and award winning chair - it is a sad loss to hear of his passing. May he Rest in Peace. My thoughts and prayers are with Lizzie, Jennifer and Zoe.
