Jonathan HASTIE Obituary

Jonathan William Hastie
May 29, 1975 - February 1, 2016

Jonathan passed away peacefully in his sleep at his Toronto holiday apartment. He had been elated to embark on an independent study holiday in a city he knew and loved, signing up for University of Toronto courses on investing. Since his premature birth with severe congestive heart failure followed by the unexpected onset of schizophrenia at age 23, Jon struggled valiantly to realize his dreams.

Jon attended Parkview Elementary School and Unionville High School (Ontario), Saudi Arabian International School Riyadh, Lakefield College School (Ontario), American British Academy in Muscat (Oman) and University of Windsor (Ontario). Despite his mental illness, he completed his Bachelor's Degree. Jon taught ESL to middle school students in Oman, was an amazing stock market researcher and investor, an outstanding flautist, a passionate photographer and an intrepid traveler of five continents. He studied Spanish in both Spain and Mexico and he worked a gap year after high school in rehabilitating addicts in a Mother Teresa institute in Calcutta, India. Jon was truly a citizen of the world.

His gentle manner, warm smile and big heart guided his path through life and left him friends worldwide. He was a daily inspiration to his parents, as well as being their personal trainer and knowledgeable travel guide. His family takes great comfort in the richness of his life and his extraordinary achievements despite all the headwinds.
Jon is survived by his loving parents, Dr. Ian and Lesley Hastie and younger brother, Miles (Sara) and by his nephew, Julian; aunts, Sarah and Jeannie; uncles, Neil (Dawn), Arthur (Linda) and Ben (Linda); as well as many cousins and by his extended family, Douglas, Joan, Danielle and Stephanie Sinclair.

A private family service was held in Toronto followed by cremation. A memorial service for family and close friends is planned for later this year.

In lieu of flowers and if desired donations, in Jonathan's memory, may be made to the Huntsville Hospital Foundation, https://huntsvillehospitalfoundation.ca
