My condolences to the Foster family. I was truly saddened when I learned of Joe’s passing. Many memories flooded my thoughts. My friendship with Joe started at the Toronto Aerospace Museum during the construction of the Avro Arrow replica. It was a pleasure to look forward not only to our weekly adventure of building the plane but in sharing the time with Joe. I don’t think that I have met a more talented person. I will always remember Joe saying that cutting the metal on a almost completed part is the last thing that we do before securing it to the plane. Every section of the plane that we built fit perfectly. At the completion of a component or panel, our efforts were always rewarded when Joe would inscribe our names on a small piece of metal sheeting and attach it to the plane’s frame. His demeanor was one of calmness, support with plenty of opportunities to chat, share stories and laughter. In this entire working flurry, Joe retained an unwavering focus of moving forward with the project. No problem seemed to faze Joe. Even though Joe was a leader in this huge project, he often remained in the background and was happy to be able to help others. I was so lucky to have known him. May he rest in peace.

My condolences to Dr. Foster's family and his co-workers. I was shocked to learn of his passing. I have been a patient of his ever since he took over Dr. Capel's practice many years ago. I always enjoyed his stories even though it was hard to respond with his instruments in my mouth. May his memory be a blessing.

CBC Radio 2 playing in Dr. Foster’s office, his big sideways grin as I rush in afraid I’m late. Tilt back and I tell him I always enjoy coming in, to a dentist no less. I look forward to his easy entertaining chat and more than once I’d mumble something to appreciate what he said, and be told Don’t talk while he’s in the middle of my mouth. I knew it was a bit playful. I followed him to Bloor/Islington when Humbertown shut him out even when I’d moved to East York. Couldn’t imagine anyone else I’d want to have as a dentist. Anyone else is an imitation. I was so sorry to hear he’d passed.

I have lived in the Humbertown area of Toronto since 1957 having moved here when I was 7 years old . We, my family, went to Dr Capel who had his practice that I believe Joe took over after he graduated from dental school. I am not sure what date that was but 40 yrs ago would be approx 1980.I have been going to see Dr. Foster since I he started as a dentist in Humbertown. I always enjoyed my visits to see Joe , and how many dental patients can say that! Once I was a few minutes late and he told me how he would put a red mark on the dental cards he kept when people were late. From that day on I would try and beat him to the office in the mornings for my appointment. I would be early in the waiting room a few minutes prior to his arrival , and as I heard him coming up the stairs to the Humbertown office I would stand up so he could see me standing in the waiting room , and I would tap my foot , and be looking at my watch on my arm , with a slightly irritated look on my face , and ask him " Dr Foster can I please borrow your red pen" feigning that he was late, and he was not by the way, as I was there before him early in the morning ! We always had a chuckle and he treated these moments with good nature, thankfully, as who wants to annoy their dentist prior to an appointment!
He was a unique , original person, who I will miss.
My condolences go out to his family , and his wife , who I just met maybe a month ago at their front door as I dropped in for a moment to see Joe . He was a fine person.

Although only knowing Joe Foster in latter years as a fellow instructor at University of Toronto dental faculty, I always looked forward to meeting and discussing with him. Now we will have to be without him. May his memory be a blessing.

Joe was a classmate in dental school, coworker in the dental clinic and a friend. He was a talented practitioner, a devoted instructor in the clinic and a generous friend. We shared an enthusiasm for the works of Winston Churchill and a common interest in engineering projects. He will be missed by us all.

Joe’s zest for life and learning was contagious. He was brilliant and when I learned he had actually built his own plane I couldn’t believe it. His enthusiasm was a gift he shared with whoever was lucky enough to have known him. I am glad I was able to know him and know that this sentiment will be shared with many others in his life.

I had the pleasure of sitting across from Joe in Lab 51, our first year at the Faculty of Dentistry. The four years we spent toiling and playing, while learning dentistry, allowed me the time to see quality of Joe's character. His character was reflected in the superb dental work he consistently produced. He will be sorely missed by many...

Joe was the Foreman on the first component of the Toronto Aerospace Museum's Avro Arrow replica. I worked on that team. There could have been no better man to lead the group who constructed the fully instrumented cockpit, which was displayed at the CNE in 1999 helping to publicize and promote the Museum and the Arrow replica construction. Joe later went on to become heavily involved in all aspects of the replica's construction. James C.Floyd, former V.P. Engineering A.V. Roe Canada Ltd. was at first reluctant to get involved with the Museum because he was at first unsure of the quality, due to other previous efforts regarding Avro Canada. I firmly believe that it was Jim seeing the fine craftsmanship and attention to detail on the replica, a course that Joe set with the first part of the project, that convinced Mr. Floyd, a giant in aviation to get on board with the project. Although modest and staying in the background, Joe was one of the driving forces behind the museum. I am happy to have known him, he is held in high esteem and will be missed.

I was so so sorry to read about Dr Foster's passing. He was my dentist for many years. I always looked forward to hear his stories about family. He was so excited when he told me he was going to be a Grandfather & was going to be known as Pops! He would chit chat away while expertly doing my teeth as he knew I liked the distraction. Dr Foster you will be sorely missed!

I considered Joe to be a good friend and colleague in the dental profession. As a classmate, I always admired how Joe could figure out just how to fix a problem. He will be missed by his friends from school.
My condolences to his family and friends. Rest in peace my friend

It's with a heavy heart and sadness that I write these few words about my friend Joe.
I'll always remember how we sat together during dental lectures and laughed and joked. I'll always remember his simple "hot dog bun" lunches, and how he stayed so skinny. Everyone in dental school believed they were good with their hands. but Joe was really good, and fast, with his hands. If anyone wanted to know what the finished dental project was supposed to look like they went to see Joe's.
As a graduate dentist Joe was very skilled, very fast, and very fair.
I used to say if Joe can't fix it, it can't be fixed.
Joe took care of myself and my five children and they were always so impressed with his skill, fairness, and compassion.
It was always a treat to speak with him and catch up.
He loved his wife, sons and grandchildren, and was so very proud of them.
I always enjoyed hearing what new instrument his wife was playing, and how his sons and grandchildren were doing, and where they were living.
I'm so sad in having lost not simply a colleague that I respected and admired, but a good friend.
Rest in peace Joe!
Your friend,
Ray

Judith and I were shocked and saddened to read of Joe's passing in today's paper. Not only was he our dentist for many years but a friend and neighbour. Our children went through school together. Joe was one of the most creative and mechanically taiented guys I have ever met. How many guys do you know who built their car and airplane? We will greatly miss having the interesting conversations we always had while sitting in his dental chair. Our thoughts are with Nancy and the family at this difficult time Don & Judith Bowerman
