Joseph WALMSLEY Obituary
WALMSLEY, Dr. Joseph Frederick Sutherland, M.D.
Peacefully on Monday, January 20, 2003, in London, Ontario. Beloved husband of the late E. Dorothy MacGregor. Loving father of Peter, Charlotte, Katherine and David. Much loved grandfather of Ashley Jones, Jon-David and Kate Walmsley, Christian and Charlotte Hegele, and great- grandfather of Devin Jones. Son of the late Margaret Ethel Sutherland and Clifton Wright Walmsley, and brother to the late Beatrice and Bill. Loving uncle to Franklin Price.
Joe graduated from the University of Toronto medical school in 1939. A proud Canadian, Joe served his country with distinction as medical officer, Royal Canadian Medical Corps, Essex Scottish Regiment. He was decorated for his valiant efforts on the beach at Dieppe, August 19, 1942, and spent almost two years in a POW camp in Germany.
A founding member of the Canadian Heart Foundation (now the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Ontario), Joe was associate medical director at Bell Canada and medical director at Kodak Canada. His ground-breaking work in industrial medicine, particularly workplace substance abuse programs, won him professional honours and the lasting admiration of those he helped. Joe enjoyed Emeritus standing in the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario and the Occupational Medical Association of Canada.
An Edwardian gentleman in spirit if not in time, Joe taught his children that privilege comes with responsibility and that speaking out against intolerance and injustice at home and abroad is payment rendered for our place on earth. He will be rememebered for his courage, strength and generous nature. He will be missed for his patience, love and guidance. Sans Peur Sutherland Clan Motto.
