Joyce DONALD Obituary

JOYCE PATTULLO DONALD (nee Findlay) October 27, 1926 - April 5, 2023 Our mum, Joyce, died peacefully on April 5 at Sunnybrook Hospital, surrounded by the love of her family. She was the daughter of the late Roy Pattullo Findlay and Frances Muriel Findlay (nee Stephens). Joyce was the beloved and loving wife of the late Graham E. B. Donald; a caring and dedicated mother to Elizabeth, Stephen (Sasha), Sarah, Anne, Graham (Jill); and grandmother to Oscar and Lucas Donald, Grace Donald, Ian and Christopher Johnson and Emily and Georgia Donald. She was predeceased by her sister, Marian Richardson (Vancouver); and her brother, Allan Findlay (Toronto); and Joyce cared deeply for their children – her many nieces and nephews, as well as her great-nieces and great-nephews. Joyce was born in Owen Sound, Ontario, but grew up in Sydney, Nova Scotia and Guelph, Ontario. She graduated from Guelph Collegiate and Vocational Institute and then attended Trinity College (class of '49) at the University of Toronto. After graduation, Joyce was employed by A.E. Ames until she married Graham in June, 1955. Joyce enjoyed a variety of activities such as knitting, needlepoint, golf, bridge, skiing, gardening, flower arranging and volunteering at the Wellesley Hospital. Joyce and Graham spent many happy winters in Naples, Florida with family and friends. In recent years, Joyce became an avid acrylic and watercolour painter – a passion she discovered while living at the Dunfield Retirement Residence where she enjoyed a wonderful community of friends and caring professionals. Spending time with her grandchildren brought Joyce (Grannie) so much pleasure and she always looked forward to hearing about their adventures and accomplishments. A celebration of our mum's life will be held on Friday, April 21, at 1:30 p.m. at Christ Church Deer Park (1570 Yonge Street, Toronto) with a reception to follow.

Joyce and Graham introduced me to life in Canada when I was just 20 years old. Never forgotten.

I met Joyce when she first arrived in Guelph and was in my classroom at Victory School. She was in Grade 6 and I was in Grade 5. We did a wonderful project on Sir Frances Drake in a large raised sand box. Joyce sewed
the costume for Queen Elizabeth with the most beautiful fine stitches......that is one of my treasured memories! We also met one another at the Grad ball U. Of T. Year `48, I believe when she was there with Graham and I was there with Robin. We last met when we went to meet
Peg McCarter Gardner in Oakville at her Sunrise residence. It has been a long cherished friendship. I am happy that she has gone peacefully into the world beyond. Blessings and love, Shirley SKeans Newell.

I am so sorry for your loss of a loved mother and grandmother. Joyce and I had many happy days at Rosedale (she always beat me). As very old ladies we reminisced about those days and the time we spent at Trinity. We were delighted our grandsons, Ian and Mark, became good friends at Laurier. I will miss her.

Sincere condolences from the MacPhee family. Your Mum was a wonderful lady who inspired many around her (including myself) with her zest for life and interest in the people around her. It was so pleasurable to watch her exploration of painting, she was quite a good painter even though she didn´t always think so. She did things on her own terms with conviction which I admired as well as the way she stayed in touch with her family near and far. She lived life to the fullest, touching many people´s lives and will be missed. Thinking of the family and hoping that the good memories can be there for you when you need them.
