JOYCE IRWIN HENRY

(nee King) Born in London, England, on October 5, 1933, Joyce died on November 28, 2025, at 5:15 p.m. in Sunnybrook Hospital, Toronto, Canada. She was predeceased by her life partner, Grahame Henry. Joyce is mourned by her younger sisters, Barbara (Bisgrove) and her family, Judith (King) and her husband, Andy (Poole); and by her brother and sister-in-law, Stuart and Maxine (Henry) and their family. She will be missed by her many friends, in the faith community, at The Dunfield Retirement Residence, in the UK and worldwide. Educated in the UK, with a B.Sc. (Economics) from the University of London, Joyce came to Canada in 1959 and subsequently met Grahame Henry. They married in 1966 and settled in Toronto. Joyce worked throughout her career as a market researcher (at Lever Brothers, General Foods, TD Bank, Canadian Facts and The Creative Research Group). In 1969, she was proud to be elected as the first female president of the Professional Marketing Research Society (now VIRIA) and, subsequently, a Fellow of the Society. A keen tennis player both in the UK and in Canada. In 1966, Joyce was thrilled to be awarded the No. 10 Women's Singles ranking in Ontario. She also played badminton and table tennis and, in later life, took up lawn bowling. Loving the exposure to other cultures, Joyce and Grahame travelled to over 100 countries, living for a time in Fiji and in Trinidad. Frequent trips were made back to England to see family and friends, as well as visiting theatres and museums. Involved in The Anglican Church on parish, local, and national committees; in 1990, Joyce was honoured to be invited to serve as a Partner in Mission to the Diocese of Adelaide, Australia. After her retirement, she was actively involved in the leadership of St Clement's College for Preaching for ten years. She volunteered at St Michael's Hospital for 12 years. With pride, she became a founding member of The Teresa Group, helping children and their families affected by HIV/AIDS. Moving to The Dunfield Retirement Residence, Joyce and Grahame eagerly participated in programs offered by their new community. Soon Joyce was involved in producing the Newsletter. For six years, she worked on the Executive Committee of the Residents' Council. In 2024, Joyce was elected as Council President. Both the Staff Appreciation Fund and the Alzheimer campaign became a focus for her fundraising skills. Her introduction of the monthly Church and Communion Service was well-received, giving her great pleasure. Thanksgiving for Joyce's life will be celebrated at St. Clement's Church, 70 St. Clements Avenue, Toronto, Ontario, M4R 1H2 (stclementsto.ca), on Thursday, January 15, 2026, at 2:00 p.m. All are welcome to join Joyce's family in the Briar Hill Room from 1:00 - 1.45 p.m. to meet and have a snack before the service. The service will be livestreamed at https://youtube.com/live/57arJ2EeNYo?feature=share, and available for a time afterwards on St. Clement's Website. Joyce's ashes will be interred with her husbands in St. Clement's Courtyard. In lieu of flowers, donations in Joyce's memory would be appreciated.
