Unexpectedly, on January 14, 2025. A gifted writer, Judith was the recipient of a Governor General's Award for poetry translation and the author of several works of fiction, as well as a memoir of her childhood. She was the daughter of the late Alice Eileen Cowan (née Leonard) and the late Herbert Nelson Cowan. She is survived by her sister, Doris Cowan; her brothers, Hector, Paul, and Graham Cowan; as well as several nieces, a nephew, and cousins in Canada, the United States and Japan. Born in Sydney, Nova Scotia, on September 21, 1943, Judith was a graduate of the University of Toronto, York University, and the Université de Sherbrooke. She dedicated many years to teaching at the Université du Québec à TroisRivières and was a respected member of the literary community. No service is planned.
