THE HONOURABLE ARTHUR JOSEPH STONE
November 19, 1929 - November 13, 2023
Arthur Stone passed away peacefully in Ottawa, predeceased by Anna Mae (Pettipas), his beloved wife of nearly 63 years. Arthur was born on a farm at St. Peter's, Nova Scotia, son of George and Charlotte Stone. He was educated in a one-room elementary school, at St. Peter's High School, under renowned principal, Helen Archibald, and at St. Francis Xavier University from which he graduated in 1952. He served as an assistant librarian while studying law at Dalhousie University prior to graduating in 1955. He graduated from Harvard Law School with a Master of Laws degree in 1956, his dissertation supervised by Professor Archibald Cox. Arthur married his cherished Anna Mae in 1956; and was proud father to daughters, Carolyn (Frank Giovannetti), Donna (William Almon), Bonnie (Randy MacLeod), Mary (Darin Barney) and Catherine (Kelly Harrison); sons, Ronald (Louise Lapointe), John (Laura Varela) and James; grandfather to Michael, Matthew, Clare, Katharine, Megan, John, Ross, Jane, Eva, William, Nora, Emma, Morgan and Livia; great-grandfather to Ella, Breya, Eli, Miles and Gordie. One of thirteen children, he is survived by sisters, Cecilia Whitty and Lorraine Rouleau. He was called to the bar of Nova Scotia in 1956 and of Ontario in 1958, and appointed Queen's Counsel in 1971. Arthur practiced law in Toronto with Wright and McTaggart and successor firms until 1983, and was for five years a lecturer in the Faculty of Law, University of Toronto. In July 1983, he was named to the Federal Court of Appeal, where he served until his retirement in 2004. He took particular pleasure mentoring aspiring law students, law clerks and junior lawyers. Upon his appointment to the court, the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Ontario bestowed the honorary designation of Counsel Emeritus in recognition for his many years as its general counsel. Arthur served several charitable organizations as an officer and director, including L'Arche Daybreak during its formative years, and such national professional bodies as the Canadian Bar Association, the Canadian Tax Foundation and the Canadian Maritime Law Association, and was a titular member of the Comité Maritime International of Brussels. He was recipient of the 125th Anniversary of Confederation of Canada Medal, 1992, and the Queen Elizabeth II Golden Jubilee Medal, 2002. Arthur maintained an abiding interest in his 18th-century Canadian forefathers and their descendants. As a native of Cape Breton – about which he wrote - Arthur established a documentary collection at Cape Breton University, was named honorary Director of the MacAskill House Museum – birthplace of famed marine photographer, Wallace R. MacAskill – and was an avid supporter of the Nicolas Denys museum – both in St. Peter's. He immensely enjoyed summer breaks with family and friends at 'the cottage' on the shores of the Bras d'Or Lake at St. Peter's - a 1967 centennial project - and maintained a keen interest in local culture and music, attending music festivals across the Island. His unbounded devotion to his beloved Anna Mae shone brightly throughout their many years of marriage. The family would like to thank his caregivers, especially Sandra, who was with him from 2020, and the nursing staff at the Queensway Carleton Hospital.
