Katharine COLENBRANDER Obituary

KATHARINE AZIZ COLENBRANDER March 7, 1960 - August 14, 2021 Katharine Aziz Colenbrander (affectionately known as Lamb) died peacefully at home due to complications from breast and ovarian cancer, after a 9-year battle with the disease. She is survived by her husband, André Colenbrander and three children: Andrew (29), Matthew (27), and Kate (23). She is also survived by her mother, Mary Aziz; brother, Adam; sister, Alexandra (Neil MacDonald); and was predeceased by her father, Alexander. Katharine spent her life in Toronto. She attended The Bishop Strachan School and Queen's University, where she made many of her lifelong friends. Following university, Katharine lived in England and travelled Europe before moving back to Toronto. She worked in marketing prior to marrying in 1990. Lamb's humour, sincerity, honesty, and bluntness allowed her to instantly connect with people. She had exceptional taste and style which were reflected in everything she did. She was passionate about gardening, antique hunting, and cooking, especially organic food. She lived her life with a keen awareness of our impact on the environment. She always lent a sympathetic ear to other people's problems. When the Najjar family fled the violence in Syria, she and others helped bring them to Canada and establish a new life. She was a fighter until the very end, and her determination and positive outlook were felt by everyone around her. The outpouring of support has helped us appreciate how deeply Katharine has touched so many people's lives. We would like to thank the staff at Princess Margaret and Toronto General Hospitals, and everyone who helped her during this time. In lieu of flowers, a donation in her memory may be made through Ovarian Cancer Canada: ovariancanada.org. A private service will be held for the immediate family, and a larger celebration of life for friends and family will take place at a future date.

I worked with Katharine in the 80´s for Jerry Goodis. I only recently heard about her passing. I send my heartfelt condolences to all who loved Katharine. She was one of a kind.
She was a mentor to me and everything I hoped to be, professionally and personally. She had a wicked sense of humour, and she had such confidence in any situation, and boy did she have style! I admired her so.
Our favourite thing to to was take Jerry´s Jaguar to get cleaned. We took our time, top down, tunes up, hair blowing in the wind. I will never forget the kindness that Katharine showed towards me early in my career.
My condolences.

I worked briefly with Lamb in 1988. She was a lively, funny and confident woman who was a great colleague. She is gone far too soon.

Kathy and I were childhood buds (we're talking single digit ages) spending countless weekends playing Barbies, creating dances to music (one of those being Summer Breeze by Seals & Crofts), skating in the backyard rink, playing with Alex and much younger Adam, enjoying time with her parents, etc., etc., etc. We were classmates at South Prep, until she skipped a grade and I chose to hang back when we moved to BSS. Lots of very fond memories that will be cherished. My deepest condolences to her mom, siblings, husband and kids.

It was with tremendous sadness that we read the news of Katharine's passing. It is an enormous loss, and our hearts and thoughts are with Andre, Matthew, Andrew, and Kate as well as Mary, Adam, and Alexandra. Katharine was elegant, smart, funny, deeply insightful, and very, very energetic. We remember Katharine best in her role as mom during Whitney School days, when Niall and Matt would get up to all sorts of antics, and Katharine along with Marya and I could only roll our eyes. She was a spectacular mom, and also incredibly perceptive about all sorts of events whether related to Whitney School or not.
As an example of Katharine's energy in the service of children, I remember one harrowing drive down the Bayview extension with a van load of kids as I attempted to stay within sight of Katharine as she expertly piloted her van full of kids to a date with the RCYC ferry. Needless to say, we arrived in the nick of time, and it only took me a couple of days to recover from the experience! I jest, but we mourn for the fact that we have lost a unique and wonderful person. If there is anything that we might do to make the next few weeks and months easier, please don't hesitate to ask.
With much love and sadness,
Glen and Niall Whyte, Marya Duckworth

I have known Katharine for a very long time from our days as students at BSS and in later years with our daughters both at BSS. She always had a very sympathetic ear for us. She was always very honest and straight forward which is something I loved about her. She was a wonderful friend to many people and will be remembered always.

Deepest condolences to Kate, Mathew, Andrew and Andre. I have many fond memories of Katharine from the Whitney School yard waiting for Kate and Victoria to emerge from the school. She had such a great sense of humour and she was not afraid to use it; conversations would get ten times more interesting when she arrived! She was a great mom and a very caring person, she will be missed by many.
Love,

There will be no one like Katharine, this is tremendously sad to hear of her passing. Her observations were always witty and she was the smartest girl I ever knew, making our time at BSS most endurable! I send my love to Andre, Andrew, Matthew, Kate, mother Mary, Alix & Adam. May Katharine's memory be a blessing as she rests enfolded in God's loving arms.

I’m so saddened to hear this news. I had the great pleasure of speaking with Katherine through my role at Ovarian Cancer Canada. I loved her passion, her energy, her humour and her frank openness. She was one-of-a-kind and it’s obvious to anyone who met her that she will leave an enormous hole in the hearts of those with whom she was closest. My condolences to her friends and family, and ‘thank you Katherine’ for all that you did to elevate the cause of ovarian cancer.

We are bereft about Kath's passing. Honestly, its the saddest thing we can imagine. She had so much to give the world. She was the among smartest, most witty (sometimes caustically so), hilarious, perceptive, and discerning people around. Indomitable and selfless at the same time. We fondly remember the gleeful and meticulously well-organized vacations and important milestones in our lives that we celebrated together with K hosting and steering the ship (birthdays, anniversaries, christenings, graduations). Her leadership and generosity shone brightest when she had a project like our sponsorship project that was so dear to her heart and ours. We will miss her terribly. Our hearts ache for Andre, Andrew, Matthew, Kate, Mary, Alex and Adam. Love and missed forever by cousin Andrew, old pal Betsy, John and god-daughter Annie. xoxo
