Katheryn Mary BROUGHTON

(nee MacLean, better known as Kae) October 8, 1926, Saskatoon, Saskatchewan October 24, 2024, Thornhill, Ontario. Kae Broughton passed peacefully on Thursday, October 24th, at home with her immediate family by her side. She is survived by her husband of 53 years, James (Jim) Broughton; her sister, Oriole Anderson; her daughter, Karen Kingsmill; her son, Stephen Clifford; her granddaughter, Jennifer (Jenny) Kingsmill (Emmanuel Madec); her great-grandson, Noah Madec Kingsmill; her nephews, Ian Yeates, Neil Yeates, Andrew Yeates, and Ivan Beeckmans; and her niece, Megan Beeckmans. Kae was predeceased by her parents, Reverend Duncan A. MacLean, and Barbara (Ray) Aitchison; and her siblings: twin sister, Barbara (Rae) Yeates (Keith Yeates); sistersm Margaret MacLean and Merlyn Beeckmans (Pierre Beeckmans); and brother, James MacLean. Kae proudly graduated with a degree in English from United College, University of Winnipeg, later completing her teacher training at the Ontario College of Education in Toronto. She was a respected English teacher and librarian at W.L. Mackenzie C.I. and York Mills C.I. in North York. She edited Heartland; An Anthology of Canadian Stories accompanied by works of Canadian art, for which she authored a comprehensive teachers' guide, published in 1983. Kae will be remembered as a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She was an avid reader and theatregoer, as well as a witty conversationalist. Kae was a staunch supporter of the New Democratic Party at both the provincial and federal levels. She was a longtime member of the Society for the Preservation of Historic Thornhill (SPOHT, now known as the Thornhill Historical Society), serving as the editor of the Society's Newsletter for a number of years. The family deeply appreciates the support of Marci Greenwald, M.D., and the efforts of Nurse Practitioner, Anita Park, and the palliative care team. We would also like to express profound gratitude for the compassionate care given by all Kae's Personal Support Workers from Spectrum Health Care, outstanding amongst them, Helen Pinor. Cremation has taken place. A Celebration of Life will be held at a time to be determined. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you consider a donation in Kae's memory to either FINCA (Foundation for International Family Assistance) or Plan International Canada, an organization devoted to the well-being of girls and women around the world.
