KAY KAYE Katheryn Jane Kaye (nee Chapman) passed peacefully and suddenly in her sleep at home in Toronto ON at 7:35 a.m. on Thursday, December 22, 2011, from metastatic cancer of the brain, diagnosed on August 13, 2011. She was 86 years of age.
Thank you to all of the caregivers, who tended to her round-the-clock, and who appreciated her strength, character, feistiness, and sense of humour, to the end.
On March 18, 1925, Katheryn Jane Chapman was born in St. Catharines ON, to Isabel (nee Mann) and Percy Chapman who were born in Baltimore ON. Her younger brother Paul, of St. Catharines ON, predeceased her on February 17, 2008.
Kay Chapman began her teaching career at the age of 18, teaching 45 students at once (all of the junior grades) in a one room schoolhouse near St. Catharines ON.
On July 2, 1949, in St. Catharines ON, Kay Chapman married Alexander Kaye of Toronto ON, who predeceased her by exactly 38.5 years, to the day.
Kay Kaye's post-graduate degree was a Masters of Education (M.Ed.). In 1990, she retired from the Etobicoke Board of Education, having touched many lives as a:
1. Primary school teacher,
2. Pupil Assessment Consultant, testing exceptional children (either high- or low-achieving),
3. Principal of the school at Lakeshore Psychiatric Institute,
4. Behavioural Consultant, called in to co-ordinate and advise on difficult cases, and,
5. Author of the book 'Behavioural Concerns', a teaching resource distributed across North America by the Etobicoke Board of Education.
In retirement, Kay Kaye was an accomplished artist, signing her work 'K2'.
She enriched all of our lives so much, especially as a mentor, sounding board, and advisor. When you talked to her, you knew you were the most important thing in her world and she was genuinely interested in your issues and observations. We can't believe she is no longer part of our world. We miss her beyond words.
She is survived by sons, Randall and Timothy, daughter Paula, and daughter-in-law Judith, as well as a number of nieces and nephews.
According to her wishes, Kay Kaye's ashes will be interred at Glendale Memorial Gardens at 1810 Albion Road in Etobicoke, as soon as possible.
A celebration of life (and reception afterwards) is planned for Sunday, January 15 at 1:00 p.m. at the Scott Funeral Home, 420 Dundas Street East in Mississauga, on the south side of Dundas just west of Cawthra and east of Hurontario (Highway 10)
Kay Kaye wanted this to be an informal celebration, with everyone encouraged to share their favourite memories with everyone else.
Since so much of Kay Kaye's professional and personal life was devoted to education and travel (having visited 6 continents), in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Kibo Foundation (a Canadian foundation dedicated to education in Africa), either online at
