KEITH DAWSON Obituary

(November 9, 1930 – August 14, 2025) Keith Dawson passed away peacefully, at the age of 94, leaving behind a life rich in service, friendship, and family. He is survived by his beloved wife, Betty (McGillis) Dawson; his children, Brian (Heather), Celia, and Chris (Libby); and his grandchildren, Nicola, Sarah, William, Andrew, Phoebe, Jack, Charlotte, and Catherine. Born in New York City in 1930, Keith devoted his professional life to the care of people living with diabetes. Educated at The Hotchkiss School, Princeton (AB), Columbia (MD) and McGill (PhD), he spent decades as a respected endocrinologist and professor at UBC. As a McLaughlin Scholar and recipient of an NIH Fellowship, he moved to the Royal Victoria Hospital, Montreal, in 1961. He served on the McGill Faculty until 1978, when he moved to Vancouver as Head of Medicine, Shaughnessy Hospital Keith devoted his professional life to caring for people living with diabetes, spending decades as a respected endocrinologist and professor at UBC. He gave many years of service to the Canadian Diabetes Association and was especially proud of his pioneering work supporting physicians in remote First Nations communities, a commitment he continued until the age of 90. In recognition of his contributions, Keith received the Gerald S. Wong Award and the Prime Minister's Distinguished Service Award for his work with First Nations communities. Beyond medicine, Keith's heart belonged to Magog, Quebec, and the Hermitage Club where he and Betty built lifelong friendships. Friends and family will remember not only his dedication, but also his quick wit and, at times, his fiery spirit, whether in lively conversation or on the tennis court. He delighted in life's simple pleasures: the company of friends, the camaraderie of a doubles match, and, most famously, his trusty 1978 VW Rabbit, which he kept running for nearly 50 years. Keith will be remembered as a devoted husband, father, and grandfather; a physician who never stopped caring for patients, and a friend whose warmth, humour, and passion left a lasting mark. The family wishes to thank Dad's friend and trusted physician, Dr. Monte Glanzberg, and the team at the VGH Cardiac ICU. A Celebration of Life will be held in Vancouver this fall. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Diabetes Canada at www.diabetes.ca.

I was saddened to hear about Dr Dawson´s passing. He had hired me in at the Shaughnessy hospital as clerk in 1990! He and his lovely wife Betty were ever so kind to me .

Dr Dawson literally changed my life when I was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes at age 24 in 1978. I was adrift with knowing how to care for my disease especially while maintaining an arduous job that required 16 hour and sometimes 24 hour work days. With his guidance I am now 71 and still going strong with no serious diabetic complications (touch wood). Forever grateful and wish my heartfelt condolences to his family.

I am so sorry for the loss of your wonderful Dad/Husband. Please give Betty a hug from me.

I was a patient of Dr Dawson (1987- to his retirement at VGH) and his wonderful wife and assistant Betty. They were a remarkable and loving team :) I think of him often while managing my diabetes and owe him my life. He helped me through a very difficult time and persevered with me until he got to the bottom of my fears and problems. If it wasn't for him, I do not think I would have managed to have a healthy life and to go onto have children of my own.

We enjoyed hearing him discuss his continued work with the northern areas of the province and why it was important.

To have known Keith, was to know a very well read & knowledgeable gentleman. I have these past few years been a spare at their special bridge group, and treated magnificently by all, Keith always making sure I was included and seen off properly in my car. To have lived to 94 with all his wits about him is quite miraculous, and he had a wonderful family always supporting him throughout his long and varied and exciting life. Hugs to all his family members.

I worked with Dr. Dawson for 13 years. He was our endocrinologist for the seabird island mobile diabetes team. We travelled throughout the province providing diabetes management to first nations peoples. Dr. Dawson would provide recommendations for our client's through an online program. He was passionate about his work and a great mentor for us on the team and will be missed

As next-door neighbours, I babysat for Keith & Betty for several years in the mid-1960´s - they were great friends of my parents. He was a one-of-a-kind guy and he´ll be missed. May his memory be a blessing.
