Kenneth HAMMOND Obituary

KENNETH LAIRD HAMMOND June 7, 1946 - December 9, 2020 With family at his side and embraced by a sea breeze, a very special soul passed out of this world following a brief struggle with cancer. It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Ken Hammond, in his 75th year in Hamilton, Bermuda. Predeceased by his mother, Frances Laird Hammond; his father, Kenneth William Hammond; and his sister, Doreen Hammond of Guelph; he is survived by his brother, Bruce, in Walkerton. He leaves behind his wife of fifty-one years, Margaret (Payne) in Bermuda; his sons, Jeremy (Carolyn) in Oakville and Matthew (Sarah) in Dundas; and his adored grandchildren, Emerson, Charlotte and Grace. He was predeceased by his beloved daughter, Jenny. Ken graduated from the University of Western Ontario in Business and in Law. He worked at Hammond Manufacturing (Guelph) and Hungerford and Guthrie law (Guelph) before moving to Bermuda nearly forty years ago to pursue a career in insurance. Ken served as President and CEO for ALAS (Bermuda) Ltd. and held numerous for-profit and non-profit board positions to befit his broad intellect, including Chairman of IPCRe's Board of Directors. His varied interests included environmental education (serving as Vice Chairman of the Bermuda Zoological Society), supporting the mentally and physically challenged, boating, golf, travel, photography and wood-working. In his personal life, he is remembered for his loving embrace of life and of all people, his undying support of family, his kind, open nature and deep generosity of spirit. With a perpetual air of fun and adventure, he brought out the best in the many lives he touched the world over. To all Ken's friends and acquaintances who shared in the joys of his life, we his family, thank you for your contribution to a life well lived. His was a rich and well-loved adventure. A family-only interment of his ashes will take place later in his beloved Muskoka, Canada. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the charity of your choice. Expressions of condolence or remembrance can be emailed to the family at [email protected]. A virtual tribute is planned.

When I met Ken about 50 years ago at work, I knew he was destined to be a leader as a kind and caring man. My condolences go out to all the families.

So sad .Have known Ken for many years. As a teen at the YMCA, at Huron College and as a family friend. Always kind and thoughtful and set a high standard as a son, brother, husband, father and friend. My prayers and thoughts are with Margie and the boys.

Cannot find the correct adjectives to descibe , Mr Hammond so please excuse my feeble attempt to do so. Words such as considerate, helpful, giving, generous, caring, mentor etc could help to best descibe him. He could also be described as a " man for all seasons", whose " arms were not too short" to reach out and help. GONE TOO SOON
Condolences to Mrs Hammond, Jeremy, Matt and other family members. "weeping may endure for the night but joy comes in the morning" . May God be with you during this storm..." This too shall pass".
R Michael Douglas. Raphael and Denice.

Marg, Jeremy and Matthew, I am sad to hear about Ken's passing - the world is the poorer for it. I will always think back fondly to our conversations on the pool deck between races. Thinking of you all at this time. Sending you love.
