Kenneth MACKERACHER Obituary

KENNETH YOUNG MACKERACHER 'Ken' This delightfully human, socially concerned, generous, sometimes irreverent, lifelong learning advocate died peacefully in Toronto on October 5, 2021 at age 89. Ken, predeceased by father Kenneth and mother Adelaide Edith Young, was so proud of the achievements of his three children Mary, David, and Gordon and, as Poppa will be greatly missed by his granddaughters Anastasia and Zoe, a clutch of extremely talented cousins, dear friends and former colleagues. Ken relished his multicultural heritage that included exuberant French-Canadian (de Lanaudiere) as well as determined Scots. Graduating from Strathcona Academy and Sir George Williams University (Concordia) in Montreal, where he initiated winter carnivals and was grad class president ('54), Ken worked with youth and young adults as a camp director and branch executive with YMCAs in Montreal, St. Catherine's, Halifax, Toronto and at YMCA Canada's national headquarters. Completing an M.Ed. (adult education) at OISE he later held senior administrative positions with Humber College, Ryerson University, B.C. Institute of Technology, Conestoga College, and the Royal Ontario Museum. Active with progressive causes and relevant professional associations, Ken was awarded the Canadian Association for Adult Education's Roby Kidd Medal for his innovative contributions to adult learning and community outreach. In retirement he served as a Unitarian lay chaplain and actively participated in the Out of the Cold program. Cremation has already taken place. A celebratory event will be announced once Covid restrictions permit greater freedom of movement and gatherings in larger groups, when bright clothing is encouraged and a touch of the colour orange appreciated. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Stephen Lewis Foundation, Out of the Cold, or the YMCA would be a fitting tribute to Ken's life and values. Messages of condolence welcomed at [email protected].

My sincere condolences to all of Ken´s family at this time. I worked directly as Ken´s assistant during his tenure as Vice President in. Continuing Education at Conestoga College in the 1980´s. Ken was a whirling dervish and had loads of ideas for progress at the College. He was a tough boss but he had a purpose and was not easily swayed from that path. I lost touch with his whereabouts after he left Conestoga and was advised by an exit employee of Conestoga of his passing. May he Rest In Peace.

Ken gave me one of my first jobs, and believed in me when others weren't sure. This was a significant piece of the foundation of my career, and provided a high quality of colleagues and friends. Ken's example of the desire to serve and support has been fundamental to my life. His spark and energy, the twinkle in his eye - oh boy, there's really something about to happen here!! A truly remarkable human being; I was so fortunate to have had that early life experience with him. Thank you, and rest in peace Ken

His free soul will wander forever creating change ,hope ,happiness laughter , song , many loud sounds like fire engines and trumpets and generally a better , more caring community for us all .....,
I am selfishly thankful he was here for me when I was a young man without any real purpose ..Ken gave me first jobs , referred to me as being a leader and gave me the courage to do things that by training and birth I was never meant to do .. The credit for anything good or useful I have done goes to Ken and the YMCA’s ......
