Kenneth MANNING Obituary

KENNETH MACMILLAN MANNING
December 9,1931 –
September 2, 2013
Ken Manning passed away peacefully on Labour Day with his family at his bedside. Ken grew up and lived in Calgary all of his life. His dedication to making Calgary a better place shone throughout his community activities. As chairman of the Children's Hospital Board he led in the development of a multidisciplinary approach to patient care with the child and family coming first. This positive environment, and Ken's persistence, led to the establishment of the Alberta Children's Hospital as an independent entity. As a Board member of Strathcona School for Boys, Ken played a quiet yet pivotal role in the expansion of the school to include girls, and the creation of Strathcona Tweedsmuir School. Ken also contributed in a significant way as an active Kinsmen, and on the Board of the Alberta Motor Association. His quiet yet helpful manner was greatly appreciated while delivering Meals on Wheels. And he worked tirelessly over many years on behalf of Christ Church. Ken was educated at Strathcona School for Boys, Trinity College School and University of Alberta, where he earned a Commerce degree and was elected as Treasurer of the Students Union. He was an ardent golfer and squash player, a keen hiker, and loved nothing more than his frequent visits to the family cabin at the Ghost. He was intelligent, hard working, thoughtful, kind, courteous and ethical. Ken is survived by his wife and best friend Joan, daughters Jane Mahon (Charlie Mahon), Anne Manning, and Mary Manning (Joel Winter). Ken loved being part of the lives of his grandchildren Michael, Sarah, Elizabeth, Andrew, Russell, Colin and Isaac. He was predeceased by his parents Carroll and Clar, and brother Michael. Memorial Service will be held at Christ Church (3602-8 St. SW), on Friday, September 6, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. Photos, memories and condolences may be shared with Ken's family through www.evanjstrong.com. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Ken's name to the Alberta Children's Hospital Foundation (2888 Shaganappi Trail NW Calgary, AB T3B 6A8; (403) 955-7211; www.childrenshospital.ab.ca). Arrangements in care of EVAN J. STRONG FUNERAL SERVICES. (403) 265-1199.
