Kenneth NEWBOLD Obituary

June 5, 1933 – August 18, 2024 We are deeply saddened to announce that Eric passed away on August 18, 2024. Eric was predeceased by his wife of 57 years, Laura Iris Newbold; and his sister, Joyce Nicholls. He will be deeply missed by his son, Bruce Newbold (Christine); his daughter, Ellen; and his grandchildren, Blake, James, and Kendra. Eric's journey that began 91 years ago has been completed. He was the son of Winnifred and Walter Newbold of Islington, Ontario, where he attended public and high school before graduating from the University of Toronto in Engineering Physics in 1955. Eric met Iris in Hamilton, where Eric was a professional engineer with Westinghouse and Iris was a nurse at the Henderson General Hospital (now Juravinski Hospital). They married in 1963 and made their home in Burlington. He remained with Westinghouse/ABB throughout his career, retiring in 1998. Eric and Iris enjoyed many years of cottaging in Haliburton as well as many trips abroad. He was a longtime member of St. Matthew on-the-Plains Anglican Church in Burlington, where he also sang in the choir and served as Envelope Secretary, Warden and Treasurer. We are proud to call him husband, father, and grandfather. In lieu of flowers, donations to MS Canada or St. Matthew's would be appreciated by the family. Visitation at Smith's Funeral Home, 1167 Guelph Line (one stop light north of QEW), Burlington (905-632-3333), on Thursday, September 12, 2024, from 3-5 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral Service will be celebrated at St. Matthews Anglican Church, 126 Plains Rd. E., Burlington, on Friday, September 13, 2024, at 11 a.m. Interment at St. George's on the Hill Cemetery, 4600 Dundas St. W., Etobicoke.

Eric and I were classmates thru the 4 years of Engineering Physics, Tor/55. At the time, Eng Phys was a hybrid blend of math and physics at the honors level and applied science at an engineering level. Eric was one of only 21 of the first year class of 50+ who graduated from the course. Eric was a highly intelligent, hard working member of the class, and his family, friends and colleagues are indeed fortunate to have known him.

Eric was a good friend of Peter and Norma McIntyre, my wife Janice's parents. They met through St. Matthew's. Both Peter and Norma have been gone for several years. Eric was present at their respective services, and we are fairly certain that they were present at Eric's. Our thoughts and prayers are with the Newbold family at this difficult time.
