PHILLIPS, Dr. Kenneth Grant ('Doc')
Died Wednesday November 21, 2012 at the age of 91. Predeceased by his beloved wife, Barbara and daughter, Jane Pepper. He is mourned by his son, Neil (Alice), his daughter Susan Keir (Andrew), his son-in-law, John Pepper (Krista), grandchildren, Amy and Emily Pepper, Angus and Struan Keir (Chloe), Lucas O'Hara and dear friend Elizabeth Hicks. To his grandchildren and son-in-law he was Doc. Ken was born on the family farm in Lobo Twp. near Ailsa Craig, Ontario. He attended a rural one- room schoolhouse and finished grade 13 at Malvern Collegiate. He entered U of T medical school in 1939, and completed the accelerated course in May 1944. Ken began his training in pediatrics at The Hospital for Sick Children in 1945 as an intern and then as the pediatrics resident. In 1947, he was appointed a one- year fellowship at the Harvard School of Public Health, Boston. After successfully completing the exams for his fellowship in pediatrics, he began his 45-year practice in Toronto's west end and remained attached to Sick Children's. He was the Chief of Pediatrics at St. Joe's for 19 years. He published a number of articles in recognized journals and after retirement wrote short stories, a number of which appeared in the Globe & Mail. Over the course of his career, he came to be recognized as the senior leading Pediatrician for west Toronto. Cremation has occurred. Friends may call at the Turner & Porter Yorke Chapel, 2357 Bloor St. W. at Windermere, east of Jane subway, Friday December 14th from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. A memorial service will be held at Yorke Chapel Saturday December 15th at 11 a.m. Special thanks to the doctors, nurses and staff at Runnymede Healthcare.
