Kerry SOMERSET Obituary

Our Fallen Angel Kerry Somerset left our beautiful blue orb on July 31, 2024. She'd recently celebrated her 55th birthday and had been getting ready for the next chapter of life, supported by a very positive team of doctors and nurses, that helped her through her cancer treatments. Kerry touched the lives of hundreds of people and will be missed by everyone who had the privilege of knowing her. Married to Todd Frith for 31 years, the two young lovebirds raised three wonderful children, Mackenzie, Elliott, and Carter. The daughter of Susan and (the late) John Somerset, she leaves behind her sister, Jill; brother-in-law, Greg Canning; and her little brother, Jay. Kerry was a mother, lover, friend, teacher, athlete, coach, camper, and tireless volunteer. She brought patience, compassion and strength to everything she did, and never shied away from a challenge. Her spirit, compassion, energy and humour will remain in and with us and we will continue to flourish because of her. A remembrance gathering will be held on the afternoon of September 7th at St. Johns's Dixie Cemetary & Crematorium, 737 Dundas St. E., Mississauga. Preceding the Celebration of Life, the family will receive Kerry's guests, starting at 1 p.m. Additional details will be posted in the Facebook group, Remembering Kerry Somerset, next week. We welcome anyone who has been impacted by Kerry to join us in celebrating her legacy. In lieu of flowers or gifts, we encourage you to support a new scholarship that is being formally set up that will support families and youth with special needs, in perpetuity. Additional details about contributing to that scholarship will be posted on the FB page in the next week.

I was so sad to hear about Kerry, she was a long time customer and always had a special place in my heart, we had so many great conversations about kids gardening, family, she was so patient, full of life and so much love for everything around her. She was definitely a very special person and I will miss her.

Kerry! She touched many lives including mine with her sense of humour, ready to learn, always helping and supporting! I will miss you my dear friend. She was one of a kind and gem of a person! With all the interactions I had with you, it made me feel so comfortable and I connected with her so well.

I didn´t know you were battling with breast cancer until last year. Hoping to see her in the next school year when I heard this sad news. You are gone but never forgotten my friend!

Heartfelt condolences to the family. May God rest her soul in peace and grant courage to the family to bear this irreparable loss.

My wife and I were just chatting about our most impactful teachers as kids, and Kerry's name naturally came up. She was not only a fantastic teacher but also my track coach at Gordon Graydon roughly 20 years ago. In googling her name, I was deeply saddened to learn of her passing. Kerry played a key role in shaping my confidence, sense of respect, and integrity. Her influence reached far beyond the classroom and athletics; she was a mentor and a coach in every sense of the word.

My deepest condolences go out to her family and loved ones. She will be greatly missed but never forgotten.

I just learned a month ago that Kerry had breast cancer, the same thing I am so fortunate to have survived and was hoping for a great outcome for her. I clearly did not know she was already so ill by then.

Kerry and I played soccer together for a few years as the Zoomers. I will always remember her speed, excellent skill and positive attitude but most of all her most wonderful smile. She clearly adored her children and often spoke fondly of their accomplishments and I am so very sad to hear she is no longer with you.

I am sadly unable to join you on the 7th but will be thinking of her and will toast her memory. RIP Kerry and go kick some butt in soccer heaven or wherever it is you land next

I am deeply saddened to hear about the passing of Kerry Somerset. Kerry was such a uniquely wonderful person and among my favourite people.

My wife Carlie Ladner taught with Kerry and her mother Sue at Gordon Graydon for several years at the start of her career. Kerry and Sue had a big impact on Carlie, grounding her in the profession, connecting over common interests and ideas, and inspiring her as a young teacher.

Then, I had the great fortune to teach with Kerry when we both came to John Fraser in 2015. Kerry and I also connected over shared passions - running, history, educational philosophy, parenting - and I have so many fond memories of working with her as fellow department heads, co-teachers in COY, in the Horizons program, and especially in collaborating to provide special education support for students.

Kerry´s warmth, patience, integrity, optimism, and sense of humour made every interaction with her a source of energy and inspiration. Like few people I have known, Kerry embodied goodness.

When my wife Carlie died four years ago, Kerry was so kind, compassionate, and supportive to my daughters and I, both in the immediate period of loss, and in our journey as a family in the years after. I will never forget the many ways Kerry let me know that she was thinking about us, how she supported me as a colleague, and how she continually gave me strength even as she confronted her own illness. I will remember Kerry always, and consider myself so lucky to have known her.

To Todd, Mackenzie, Elliott, Carter, and Sue. We don´t know each other personally, but I feel like I know you from the many conversations Kerry and I shared. When she spoke to me about each of you, she smiled and glowed.

I am heartbroken that Kerry is no longer with you, but I know she will live on in all the ways she is part of you. I also like to think that she and Carlie will cross paths again in spirit.

I am thinking of you all, and wishing you comfort, strength, and hope in each day to come.

I had Ms Somerset for Leadership in Grade 12 (or was it 11?) in 2002-2003 I believe. She was a fantastic teacher - warm, open minded and kind.

My condolences to the entire family. I have known Kerry since I taught her grade 11 math. All the wonderful compliments I see about her now applied when she was just sixteen. She will be greatly missed by scores of people. RIP Kerry.

I met Kerry playing women´s soccer in Oakville. Played for several years together. Great athlete and very kind. Later, she was an incredible resource for my son at Fraser HS. We later connected again after I heard about her breast cancer. I too had it a year before. I was just thinking about touching base again when I heard this news. It broke my heart that such a wonderful person has left us. She was such a proud mom and wife. My heart and prayers are with her family. Never forgotten. Xo. Kim MacDonald

I had the pleasure of having her as an English teacher for 3 out of 4 years of high school at Graydon! She also said if I needed help with my papers in college, by all means to send her an email! I was saddened to learn she passed! And hope that her family takes the time they need

I taught Kerry in teacher training and saw her early in her career in teaching as I o observed a student teacher in her school. She was remarkable and on a list of "I wonder how she is doing at this stage of her career. So the latest news is sad.
