Landon PEARSON Obituary

THE HONOURABLE LANDON MACKENZIE PEARSON, OC, LLD November 16, 1930 - January 28, 2023 Lucy Landon Carter Mackenzie Pearson died peacefully in Ottawa, in her 93rd year, surrounded by her children. She will be much missed and lovingly remembered by her children, Hilary (Michael), Anne (Mark), Michael (Kerry), and Patricia (Ambrose); by her grandchildren, Meaghen, Maija, Kira, Mieka, Graeme, Rachel, Lucy, Alex, Laura, Clara, Geoffrey and Euan and their partners; and by her many nieces, nephews and cousins in the Mackenzie, Pearson, and Hannah families. She was a wife, mother, grandmother, advocate, author, speaker, Senator, and champion for the voices of children and youth. Over the course of her long life, she worked tirelessly to build 'a Canada fit for children,' inspiring and encouraging innovations in policy, law and practice that give children a chance to flourish. She insisted on letting children and youth speak for themselves, believing that they have the right to be heard and a voice in shaping their own lives. Her interest in children and families was a thread that connected many different parts of her life. As the wife of diplomat and Ambassador Geoffrey Pearson, she represented Canada proudly in France, Mexico, India, and the Soviet Union. The birth of her own five children sparked her intellectual curiosity in the study of childhood. In 1979, she served as Vice-Chair of the Canadian Commission for the UN International Year of the Child, where she first articulated a program for bold action on behalf of Canada's children. As she travelled the world, she missed no opportunity to observe and reflect on the experiences of children, authoring a book on child development in the Soviet context of the 1970s and 1980s, Children of Glasnost. From 1984 to 1990, she served as president and Chair of the Canadian Council on Children and Youth. In 1994, she was appointed by Prime Minister Jean Chretien to the Senate of Canada, serving eleven highly productive years during which she became known as the 'Children's Senator.' She was the Personal Representative of the Prime Minister to the UN Special Session on Children in 2002. After she left the Senate in 2005, she continued her activism and intellectual leadership by founding the Landon Pearson Resource Centre for the Study of Childhood and Children's Rights at Carleton University. In 2008, she was appointed to the Order of Canada for her extraordinary contributions which changed the way in which children's rights are understood and affirmed across Canada. She was as dedicated to children and youth in her private life as she was in her public life. She loved and encouraged her five children, and she delighted in her twelve grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Constantly curious, an avid reader of fiction and poetry, a follower of global events, connected to a network of longstanding and loyal friends, always ready to mentor the young, she sparked lively conversations and engaged with new ideas and friendships to the very end of her life. Passionate about family history, she was the caring and attentive matriarch of her extended Pearson and Mackenzie families. Family and friends may visit at the central chapel of Hulse, Playfair & McGarry, 315 McLeod Street (at O'Connor) on Saturday, February 4, from 2 to 5 p.m. A private family funeral will follow. A Celebration of her Life will be held in Ottawa in the spring. In lieu of flowers, and in honour of her legacy, friends may wish to make a donation to the endowment of the Landon Pearson Centre for the Study of Childhood and Children's Rights at Carleton University in Ottawa. futurefunder.carleton.ca/giving-fund/senator-pearson/

Many young people growing up in foster care remember fondly the year when she arranged for us to host a conference for them in the Houses of Parliament. Thank you Landon. May you rest in peace and receive your just reward.

C´est avec tristesse que je viens de voir cet avis suite au décès de madame Pearson. J´ai connu madame Pearson sur le dossier des enfants dans les années 90s. Sincères condoléances à sa famille.

Those we love are as close as a warm memory.
Landon was my mentor for 30 years. As a young woman, she encouraged and supported me throughout my career in my plight to protect missing, exploited and trafficked children. She was one of a kind and a blessing to so many persons striving to make Canada a safe place for children.

Hello Hillary & Patricia, and the Pearson family. I was sorry to learn of Landon's passing through the recent G&M article. She was still part of my memories of our time together in the Master of Education (psychopedagogy) program at the University of Ottawa in 1974. I would have loved to be in touch with her for a renewal of our friendship and to discuss our mutual memories of that year. My email is attached, and I would love to hear from either of you.
All the best,
Maureen Powers

I knew Landon from her work as a sponsor for the Global Engagement Seminar at the University of Waterloo. Her enthusiasm, passion, wisdom, and years of experience advocating for children and social change was incredibly inspiring. Landon was also funny and down to earth. You wouldn't have known she had held such vaunted positions in her life, because she didn't act that way with us students!

Thank you, Landon. Your memory will live on in my heart and our work.

Dear Hilary and family, I was so sorry to hear about Landon. I have so many wonderful memories of working with her at the Canadian Council on Children and Youth. She was an exceptional leader - smart, dedicated, kind and compassionate. She inspired me to spend a career working for children and youth and I am sure there are many others doing similar work because of Landon´s influence. She was a great woman who made an enormous contribution. Thinking of you, Michelle

Dear Hilary, Peter and I send our deepest condolences to you and the family on the loss of your lovely mother. I only met her once but her joyfulness on that occasion left a great impression on me. I lost my own mother Thelma 18 months ago at age 92. It is a hard adjustment. Love to you. Jane

I met Hilary, Landon's daughter, at university and we have been friends ever since. Though Hilary I got to know her mother, through stories of her extraordinary life, first as a diplomatic wife, and then as a Senator and passionate advocate for children's rights. I was slightly apprehensive when Hilary announced that Landon wanted to visit us, in our remote village in northern Provence. We have none of the accoutrements which people associate with the South of France, horizon pools, tennis courts, acres of garden, but, as I guess she has always done, Landon leapt in with both feet, chatting to everyone, walking in the beautiful countryside, and swimming with great vigour in the lake. Of course every day ended with incisive political analysis, laughter and rosé on the terrace as the sun disappeared behind the mountain. She will leave a huge gap in her family and among her many friends, and I feel privileged to have known her. Rest in Peace Landon.
