Born in Sydney, Nova Scotia, on Cape Breton Island, Bobby grew up in the town of Dominion. He loved spending time with his family and was an avid swimmer, skater, skier, fisherman and hunter. He was a true Cape Bretoner who loved the outdoors and the peace he found in nature. Bobby was a graduate of St. Francis Xavier, earning a B.A., B.Ed., M.Ed., and completed a Ph.D(ABD) Educational Administration from OISE at University of Toronto. A teacher by profession, his 27-year career culminated in the position of Principal and Chief Education Officer of Nova Scotia Community College, Sydney campus. He also served as Policy Advisor to the Minister of Education and Supervisor of the Apprenticeship division. Bobby was elected Mayor of Dominion for three consecutive terms, and was involved in Conservative party politics, running political campaigns at the provincial and federal levels. He was also an entrepreneur, who helped run the family's general store/outfitters, and built and operated rental cottages at Cheticamp Island Beach along the Cabot Trail for 30 years. Later, he was chosen as the sole credit union representative on the UN Advisors Group on Inclusive Financial Sectors, and was also appointed by Ireland's Minister of Finance to Chair the Credit Union Restructuring Board for the Irish credit union movement. Beyond his many accomplishments, Bobby most valued his time with family. Taking care of his beloved mother, and his siblings as they grew up, and in later years, treasuring his life with Kelly and his stepdaughter, Caroline. Bobby and Kelly were truly each other's rock, sharing both personal and professional pursuits together, caring for each other till the end. Bobby will be surely missed by the many people he touched around the world, but his loss will be most deeply felt by his extended family and Kelly and Caroline. May he rest in peace.
