Lawrence PENNELL Obituary



PENNELL, The Honourable Mr. Justice Lawrence 'Larry' QC; PC; LLD A dedicated servant of the law. Passed away on August 9, 2008 at McMaster Medical Centre, Hamilton following a valiant fight. Beloved husband of the late Anne Pennell. Cherished father of Brian and Kerry. Dear grandfather of Jennifer and Jason. He served with the RCAF as flight lieutenant navigator with the 417 squadron. Called to the bar in 1945. Practiced law in Brantford for 16 years. Elected Liberal MP for Brant-Haldimand from 1962 – 1968. Served as Deputy House Leader, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Finance, the Hon. Walter Gordon, acting Minister of Justice and Solicitor General in the Cabinet of the Rt. Hon. Lester Pearson. Appointed Justice of the Ontario Supreme Court, a position he held for 17 years. During this time he also served as Chancellor of McMaster University for 7 years. On retirement he served as Deputy Chairman of the Ontario Criminal Review Board for 6 years and also headed a review of regional government in Haldimand-Norfolk for the Ontario Government. Friends will be received at the McCLEISTER FUNERAL HOME, 495 Park Road North, Brantford on Sunday 2 – 4 & 7 – 9 p.m. A private family service will be held on Monday. Interment at Farringdon Burial Ground. A public memorial service will be held in September. The date, location and time of the memorial service to be announced later. If wished, memorial donations to the charity of your choice gratefully appreciated.
