With deep sorrow, the family announces the passing of Leo Sayn-Wittgenstein on December 8, 2025, in Ottawa, at the age of 90. Born in Hangu, Romania, Leo was the son of Leon and Eva (née Wassilko de Serecki) Sayn-Wittgenstein and is survived by Maria, his wife of 60 years; children George (Audra), Alex (Jeanne), Katherine (Keith), and Peter (Josefina); nine grandchildren; Alexandra, Caroline (Ryan), Eva, Katherine, Leo, Elizabeth, Veronica, Emily and Alejandro; great-grandson Jameson. Brother of Catherine von Schoenberg (late George). Brother-in-law to Olga von Niessen (late Nikolaus), Alina Popp (Alfred), Andrew Forsyth (late Dorothy) and Helen Olsoufieff. Remembered fondly by his nieces, nephews and their families, and by many cousins and friends at home and abroad. Leo was a prominent figure in Canadian forestry and remote sensing. His distinguished career included serving as Director of the Forestry Management Institute of Canada, co-founding the consulting firm Dendron Resource Surveys, and later becoming Director General of the Canada Centre for Remote Sensing. Family and friends are invited to visit the West Chapel of Hulse, Playfair & McGarry, 150 Woodroffe Ave., Ottawa, on Sunday, December 21, 2025, from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Monday, December 22, 2025, at St. Basil's Church, 940 Rex Ave., Ottawa, at 11:00 a.m. Reception to follow at the Infinity Convention Centre, 2901 Gibford Drive, Ottawa.
