Mike was a friend, colleague and neighbour in Ottawa in the mid to late 1970´s. After that our careers took us in different directions although following retirement we both became members of AmbCanada, the association of retired Canadian heads of diplomatic missions. My wife Cheryl and I had only recently discussed reconnecting with Mike following our move last Fall from Ontario to Sidney BC, to become "fellow islanders". Needless to say, we were very surprised and saddened to learn of Mike´s passing and extend our deepest condolences to his family and loved ones. Mike was a class act and good man in every way.

My Dad was my hero, my best friend. I will miss our Sunday night chats, his advice and encouragement. He was stoic until the end, never fearing death, never wavering. He held no anger nor despair that it was he who must go. He simply said "we all wish we had more time but I have had a good life and now it is my time, my journey is at an end". I love you Dad.

Uncle Michael was such an iconic figure in my life. I still have the doll he gifted me on the day I was born, as well as several books he bestowed upon me over the years. He had a regal way about him, but also shared his dad's wonderful sense of humour. He was a gifted, talented, loving and witty man and I'm glad I had the chance to share the time with him that I did. My condolences to his beloved wife, Anna, my uncle Stephen, Eliza, Mark and Catherine, the rest of our family and all of his friends. He will be missed, but never forgotten. RIP Uncle Michael. Love you. -Dani(ella).

Michael and Linda were class acts in every respect. I enjoyed Linda´s book, The River, about Singapore and received good advice from Mike about Singapore prior to my own posting there. The advice I gave Mike was not to tell the organisers of the External Affairs hockey or football teams that he was an officer if he wanted to have a chance to play.

I will miss Mike. He was such a positive person.

My parents met Linda and Michael in Berlin in 1966, the year Eliza was born. They were fast friends - Nick and Michael were on a similar professional trajectory like many men of their era. Linda and Monique completed the foursome and what wonderful memories they created. It took a simple introduction for me to instantly fall in love with Eliza, Mark and Kathryn. Love you all like the siblings you were to me. Michael, Linda, Monique and Nick - i hope you´re having a cocktail tonight, laughing at the silliness of it all. God how I miss them. Rest In Peace Michael

I remember the first time meeting him, at the Moosehead in Paris, after it had opened. Incredibly generous and unassuming. He was a class act.

Please enjoy this moment I shared with my dad...he came to see me last summer. Beyond the chronicle of achievements he needed to note, this is the man I will remember. A shy, inhibited, tender person. Rest in peace Dad. Love, your daughter Eliza.
