Linda ALLEN Obituary

LINDA LESLIE ALLEN 1949 - 2022 It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beautiful mother, Linda Allen. Surrounded by her children, Gareth, Bronwen, and Gwyn Symmons, Linda left us on August 15, 2022. Prior to her passing, her grandchildren, Beau and Byron; and close friend, Lissa, had been able to visit her. A person of remarkable energy and drive, Linda made everlasting contributions to her profession, voluntary sector, and family. She was an accomplished downhill and cross-country skier and enjoyed outdoor activities such as cycling and canoeing earlier in her life. Born in Windsor, Ontario on February 17, 1949, Linda and her family soon moved to Oakville, where she had many fond memories growing up. Later she studied Community and Regional Planning at the University of Waterloo and received her Master's degree at Carleton University. Early in her career, Linda moved to Edmonton and worked with the Alberta Task Force on Urbanization when the province was transitioning from a predominantly rural society to an increasingly urbanized one. Returning back to Ontario in the late '70s, Linda became a Senior City Planner for the City of Ottawa. She worked on a variety of impactful projects including the City's Official Community Plan and the creation of the Rideau Centre. Always looking for a new challenge, Linda moved to BC in 1983. Settling in Victoria, she set up CitySpaces Consulting - a planning and development consulting firm - with partner and co-founder Gwyn Symmons. Linda was the President for 35 years and spearheaded the company's growth, establishing its long-term commitment to "building lasting, livable communities". A brilliant strategist, Linda developed the company's core values and expanded the business into Vancouver and throughout the province. She was a skilled policy analyst, enthusiastic researcher, excellent writer, and superb organizer. Throughout her career, Linda tirelessly advocated for affordable housing. She was also an inspiration and mentor to many young planners, especially young women. Linda was the President of the Planning Institute of BC from 1995 - 1997 and co-chaired the Canadian Institute of Planning National Conference in 2013. In the twilight of her career, she was appointed a member of the Real Estate Council of BC and served in this capacity until 2021. Linda loved baseball and enjoyed watching her son and daughter play at Fireman's Park when they were young. She served as President of Oak Bay Little League and later Carnarvon Baseball, championing a number of positive upgrades at both clubs. She was also involved with the Oak Bay Parks Recreation and Culture Commission and Community Social Planning Council of Greater Victoria. Linda will be greatly missed by her family, friends, and colleagues at CitySpaces. She is survived by Gareth, Caryssa, Bronwen, Beau, Byron, Lissa, and Gwyn. A Celebration of Life will be held at a time to be determined. Condolences may be offered to the family at www.mccallgardens.com and donations may be made to the Victoria Foundation.

Linda was very generous with her assistance to all of the younger planners she found herself working with over the years. As a new-comer to Victoria in 1992, I found Linda to be a thoughtful, inclusive professional, willling to share her experience and ideals, willing to make a newbie feel like a team member.

As others have said, Linda's laugh was delightful, and warmed up many otherwise tense situations.

My thoughts and condolences to Gwyn, the family, and the City Spaces crew. She will be missed.

Infinitely likable and very knowledgeable in planning, I truly enjoyed her company and benefitted from the services of her planning consultancy. I had great admiration and appreciation for Linda, as a planner, as a business woman and as a strong and caring female leader. I was really pleased when she was recognized as a Fellow of the Canadian Institute of Planners and I regret that we did not recognize her still further when she was with us. She will be greatly missed. My condolences.

My sincere apologies - your mom was an amazing woman who accomplished much in her life- both personally and professionally. She was kind to me as newcomer to Victoria and to the city's planning department. Her smile and laugh were infectious.
I am so sorry for your loss.

Linda and I go back 50 plus years, growing up together in Oakville, Ontario

Being my senior of 3 years, Linda played a huge factor as my role model and friend,
during adolescent years

After she went off to Waterloo-I maintained a strong friendship with her parents,Bill and Gwen Allen-visiting them often at 248 Gloucester Avenue

Linda and I connected once again in 2015-with her visiting me at my home in Clearwater, Florida-on 3 occasions

We picked up from where we last left off-never missing a beat

Indeed,a very close bond as friends

I was so hoping moving forward, that we would have enjoyed many more times together during our retirement years´-unfortunately,
that was not meant to be

I truly have lost the sister I never had-a tremendous loss

We were in touch weekly, if not daily since reuniting-I will miss hearing from her-will miss hearing her voice-her laughter

Gwyn
I´m thinking of you, Bronwen, and Gareth during this very difficult time...

I do hope our paths cross on my next visit to British Columbia-I would truly like that very much

Thinking of all of you;
Franklin Spencer Rock
