Lino MAGAGNA Obituary

LINO MAGAGNA
C.M., E.MBA, Ph.D, P.Eng.
   January 23, 1933 -
December 7, 2017

It is with great sadness that we announce the death of our dearly loved father, Lino. He was at peace when he died after a short battle with cancer. He will be sorely missed by his son, Mark; and daughter, Marina; his loving granddaughter, Sophie; and dear partner, Robbie Shaw. In Italy and New York, his dear brothers, Carlo (Giuliana), Paolo (Lucy) and Sandro (Ada) and many cousins, nieces and nephews will miss him very much. He will also be missed by Paul Shaw, Danielle Carter, Terry Shaw, and Bill Klimowych; dear friends the Flaim family; Ian Russell (Bruna Nota); the Bellissimo family; former wife, Rosemary (nee MacLean); former son-in-law, John; and many acquaintances too numerous to name.
Born in Revò, Trentino, Italy, our Dad arrived in Canada by ship on his own in 1952 with one small suitcase and not knowing a word of English. Four years after arriving in Canada, he went on to pursue his degrees as a top student at UBC and U of T. It was at UBC where he met his lifelong friend and English professor Gordon R. Elliott. In addition to a successful career at Ontario Hydro supervising the design of computer controls for Ontario's Nuclear Power Stations and moving into Finance before retirement, he also devoted his time and energy to volunteering because of his firm belief in social justice and his wish to help others.
In the late 60's he became friends and worked closely with The Right Honorable Charles Caccia, MP for Davenport. He then became the President of COSTI- IIAS Immigrant Services for 10 years, the founder and first Vice President of the National Congress of Italian-Canadians, and former Vice Chairman of the Canadian Consultative Council on Multiculturalism.
After 20 years on the Senate and the Board of Directors of York University, he remains an Honorary Member of its Board. He was a Member of the Board of the United Way GTA, Ontario March of Dimes, and Member of the Ontario Council of University Affairs. In 1988, he became a Member of the Order of Canada and also received the Golden and Diamond Jubilee medals.
Dad also had a love for poetry and of the arts spending many days reading, attending music concerts, galleries, theatre and opera with Robbie. Having grown up in a valley of the Alps, this instilled a lifelong love of mountain hiking, hiking on the Bruce Trail and the beauty of nature.
In his memory, donations to Music Toronto or Anishnawbe Health would be appreciated. At our Dad's request there will be no service. Our thanks go out to the doctors and nurses at Trillium Health Partners, Mississauga for their help, care and dedication.
