Condolences to all the family. I was one of the lucky home economists to work for Lois at the Food Advisory Division in the 1970s. She offered great professional and technical advice, was generous with her time and made work lots of fun. I have many fond memories of researching food and nutrition problems and disseminating the information across Canada. She also hosted great dinners at her lovely home. We became friends and I enjoyed visits with Lois in Ottawa after my husband and I moved to Edmonton. We shared an interest in world travel as well as the profession of home economics. Sincerely, Marie Slusar

Lois had remarkable cheerful energy and was so non-judgmental. When she came to visit in BC, she pitched in thinning carrots, doing dishes and helping can peaches. I was terrified the first time as she had her Masters in food science! She actually showed me how to cut corners safely.

Lois had black hair when younger and when I received a doll with black curly hair, I immediately dubbed her my "Aunt Lois doll." She was thorough, teaching my youngest about washing the bottoms of plates. Always cheerfully energetic, I still remember her arriving and offering to help with canning peaches. She did her Masters degree in food science (!) and I was terrified she would criticize but no, Lois rolled up her sleeves and pitched in, even showing me a few corners to cut. She was hugely supportive of my business and gave me useful tips that I follow to this day.

Lois Hurst's contribution to Canada and Home Economics is unparalleled. She managed Canada's most significant test kitchen on the top floor of the Sir John Carling building. All Home Economists who either worked with her, knew her by reputation or just loved the food and nutrition information that streamed out to all Canadians grieve her passing. Know that I, Cathy Enright, a professional Ontario Home Economist have heard from many ,many Home Economists who are sharing their memories of Lois. Canada thanks you Lois. Our condolences to her family.
