THE HONOURABLE LOUIS LEBEL 1939 - 2023 The Honourable Louis LeBel, retired Justice of the Supreme Court of Canada, passed away peacefully at his home in Quebec City on June 8, 2023, at the age of 83. He is survived by his beloved wife Louise Poudrier; and his children, Paul, Catherine and François; his seven grandchildren; his two sisters; and his brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law. He will also be missed by his legal and academic family. He practiced law in private firms in Quebec City from 1963 to 1984, and from 2015 to 2023. Appointed to the Supreme Court of Canada in 2000 after 15 years on the Quebec Court of Appeal, Justice LeBel was recognized as one of Canada's foremost legal mind who contributed to the advancement of administrative law, labor law and Canadian bijuralism. His legacy as a jurist is outstanding, and his judgments are distinguished by their accessibility and comprehensibility. Louis LeBel's personal qualities stand out when friends, colleagues and family remember him: a keen mind, erudite, benevolent, with exemplary collegiality and wisdom. He was made a Companion of the Order of Canada in 2018. The family will receive condolences on Friday, July 14, 2023, from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. and on Saturday, July 15, 2023, from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the Coopérative funéraire des Deux Rives (1420, boulevard WilfridHamel, Québec G1N 3Y6). A religious service will be held on Saturday, July 15, 2023 at 2 p.m. in St-Yves Church (2470, rue Triquet, Québec City). Following the service, a reception will be held in the Atrium of Université Laval's Charles-De Koninck Pavilion.
