Lucas MURNAGHAN Obituary

DR. LUCAS MURNAGHAN Dr. Lucas Murnaghan passed away peacefully on Tuesday, March 23, 2021 at the age of 45, at his home in Toronto, Ontario, surrounded by loved ones. Diagnosed with a rare cholangiocarcinoma in February 2021, he received treatment at Princess Margaret Cancer Centre before returning home to be with his family. Lucas obtained his medical degree from Queen's University and completed his orthopaedic surgical training at The University of British Columbia. His clinical practice at Toronto's Hospital for Sick Children spanned from August 2009 to February 2019 and centred on the principle of 'growing athletes'. He worked diligently with pediatric and adolescent patients - many of whom went on to play collegiate and professional sports - to help them achieve their athletic goals. Outside of his medical practice, Lucas chased his interests with vigor, competing in marathons, triathlons, Iron mans and bike rallies. Finding solace in water, he spent time traveling the world to free dive and surf and established a reputation as a renowned water photographer. While his start in photography began by documenting surfing in Toronto and around the world, his creative heart was in the fine art underwater photography that he eventually became known for. In 2019, Lucas hosted his debut photo exhibition, 'Beneath the Surface', in parallel to the release of a photography book of the same name. The culmination of two years of underwater exploration, 'Beneath the Surface' expressed his notions of male vulnerability and confidence. Slipping underwater, he removed traditional constraints and conventions to liberate both subject and viewer to explore themselves in a parallel universe and express what lies beneath. While Lucas enjoyed popularity for his photography, he remained an active member in Toronto's LGBTQ+ and surf communities. As co-owner and operator of 'Surf the Greats', he worked side-by-side with his partner Antonio, to create a safe space for connection in and out of the water. A private celebration of life will take place at the Bruce Peninsula in fall 2021. His family requests that donations be made on his behalf to: Temmy Latner Centre for Palliative Care Toronto People With Aids Foundation Jack.org If you wish to send flowers, the family has kindly requested potted plants instead for environmental reasons. These will serve as living memories of Lucas: Chive Live Plants (To be delivered at 3-75 Markham St. Toronto, ON. M6J 2G4)

We were shocked to hear of Lucas’s passing. He was a great communicator and a great doctor. He helped my son of 12 years, ensuring him that the knee surgery will be done well and that he has nothing to worry about. I willl forever be grateful to have met Lucas. May his soul Rest In Peace.

A classmate just told me about this today. In High School he was a star: popular, athletic, smart and friendly. I'm not surprised he achieved so much in life. I have only good memories of him. My condolences to his family.

Lucas is the true definition of a 'kind-hearted soul'. He has a relentless smile that is essentially painted on his face. Lucas and I played high school water polo together for four years, winning the city championship each year, including in '93 when many of our 'big guns' had graduated the year prior. It was the younger core of true swimmers, like Lucas, who allowed us to out swim the more skilled teams and defend our title. I hadn't seen Lucas in a while however I have a memory of catching up with him in the Bytown Market one evening, years ago, and my enduring memory of that evening is of course his signature smile. Lucas, I know you are smiling right now and I know you will never stop. I send my deepest condolences to Lucas's family and friends.

I'm so sorry to hear this. I got to spend time with Dr. Murnaghan on my Paeds Ortho elective as a medical student and witness his dedication to excellence firsthand. He was an inspiration and will be sorely missed.

Dr M was an exceptional surgeon who helped my son feel comfortable going into surgery, and confident in recovery.
His calm demeanor, kindness, sense of humor, and knowledge went a long way towards easing my son's fears surrounding the surgical process. He gained great respect not only with his clear cut expectations, but also his willingness to truly listen to and work with his patients vs just telling the parents what the course of action would be. We were very fortunate to work with him as my son's surgeon and he will most definitely be missed.

Today, as I read his obit in the Globe I was surprised to read about the beautiful little blonde boy with the clear blue eyes that I remembered from so long ago in the Westboro Playgroup.
What a lot he went on to achieve! His family must be very proud.
My very deepest condolences.

DR. M was an amazing surgeon and true gentleman to the core. His smile was all my daughter needed to feel safe while undergoing her surgery as with his last words to her ...”all the strength you need is in your mind...if I am not scared you should not be!” We will forever be grateful to such an amazing man. He is on our prayers along with his family ! May God give us the strength that Dr. M had! Our deepest condolences to his family!
