Passed away on Wednesday, May 21, 2025, in her 98th year. Known affectionately as "Mabs," she was the loving wife of Roly (predeceased 2007); mother of Steve (Jessica); grandmother of Margaret and Charlie (Anna); great-grandmother of Nico; sister of Jane Hammond (the late John) and the late Irene Dowey (the late Jack); and a cherished aunt to several nieces and nephews. Born in Toronto to the late Bill and Peggy Hills, Mabs grew up in the Beaches, and often reminisced about playing in the streets with neighborhood kids and the strong sense of community that shaped her. As a young woman, she worked at Eaton's department store and later as a secretary for Lever Brothers. Though accepted into a nursing program, she ultimately chose to dedicate herself to family life. When Roly was named Director of Pathology at Oshawa General Hospital, the couple relocated to Oshawa. While she missed Toronto at first, Mabs grew to love her new home and built lifelong friendships, particularly among other medical families. Known for her warmth and reliability, Mabs was the neighbor everyone trusted – often asked to keep an eye on homes or care for pets while families were away. She had a special place in the heart of Steve's childhood friends, many of whom remember her generous spirit – giving rides to school and keeping watch over pool games in the backyard with good humour. Mabs will be remembered for her kindness, quiet strength, and the love she gave her family and friends throughout her long life. A reception will be held at home in Kingston, in mid-June, to celebrate Mab's life. Flowers gratefully declined, in favour of donations to the Kingston General Hospital.
