BERNADETTE MACDONALD The Eucharist celebrating the life of Bernadette Macdonald, QC, of Halifax, who died Tuesday, February 18, 2003 at the QEII Health Sciences Centre, Halifax, from injuries sustained as the result of a car accident, was held on Friday, February 22, 2003 at the Mount Saint Vincent Motherhouse Chapel, Halifax. Concelebrating the funeral mass were Rev. Robert Floyd and Rev. Bernard O'Neill. Friends and colleagues from the legal communi- ty participated in the liturgy. Lectors were David Almon, Paula Taylor, Michael Kontak and Kathy Petite. Honourary Pallbearers were Marshall Burgess, QC, Duncan Beveridge, QC, Brian Newton, QC, Christopher Morris, Darrell Carmichael, Roger Burrill, Ingrid Brodie and Susan Potts. Ushers were Suzan MacLean, Fred Honsberger, Peter McDonough, QC, Suzanne McDonough, Gregory Lenehan, Arthur Theurkauf and Daniel Kontak. Born in New Glasgow, Nova Scotia, April 8, 1953, she was a daughter of Alan and Annemarie (Levesque) Macdonald and a granddaughter of the late Judge Alan and Christine (MacKinnon) Macdonald, (Antigonish, N.S.) and the late Regis and Theresa (Ruet) Levesque, (St. Leonard, N.B.) For many years, she spent her summers at the family cottage at Mahoney's Beach on St. Georges Bay, Antigonish and more recently in Chester, N.S. Bernadette was graduated from Mount Saint Vincent Academy, Mount Saint Vincent University and Dalhousie Law School. Following her graduation from Dalhousie in 1978, she accepted a position in pri- vate practice in Calgary, Alberta, returning to Nova Scotia in 1981 to join the Department of the Attorney General as an Assistant Prosecuting Officer. At the time of her death, Bernadette was a Senior Crown Counsel with the Nova Scotia Department of Justice. She was highly respected by members of the law enforcement community, who valued and appreciated her skill and dedication in preparing and presenting complex legal cases. Bernadette considered it an hon- our to serve her community and her profession and did so with great passion and distinction. She was active on many committees of the Nova Scotia Barristers' Society, including Chair of the Provincial Liaison Committee, member of the Administration of Justice Committee and member of the Society Discipline Committee. In recognition of her professional achievements, the Canadian Judicial Institute invited her to be the keynote speaker at the New Brunswick Judges Educational Conference in 1999. She served on the Board of Governors of Dalhousie University, was Past President of the Dalhousie Alumni Board of Directors and chaired numerous committees at Dalhousie. In recognition of her outstanding contributions to Dalhousie University, she was awarded the A. Gordon Archibald Alumni of the Year Award in 1999. Bernadette also volunteered as the Vice Chair of the Board of Governors of the Nova Scotia College of Art & Design, and as a member of the Board of the Legal Education and Action Fund (LEAF), the Nova Scotia Art Bank Review Advisory Board, and the Pier 21 Society. She was a Life Member of the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia and a member of Ashburn Golf & Country Club. In addition to her beloved parents, she is survived by her sister Marie- Paule, Waterloo, and brothers, Alan, Toronto and Ronald Foley, Halifax; aunts Muriel Macdonald, Antigonish, Kathleen Macdonald, Halifax; uncles Daniel Almon, Halifax; Dr. Regis (Rolande) Levesque, N.B.; and cousins Frank Macdonald, Catherine Macdonald Aubrecht, Antigonish; Alan Almon, Calgary; Daniel Almon, David Almon, Michael Almon, Christene Almon and Kenneth Almon, all of Halifax; Ronald Harding, Sheet Harbour; Alan Harding, Dartmouth and Ian Harding,Vancouver; Martin Levesque, Andrée Levesque, Pierre Levesque and Madeline Levesque, N.B. Bernadette was a truly engaging and generous friend to many, and treasured by them all. Her joie de vivre and vibrant character will be cherished and fondly remembered by everyone who had the privilege of knowing her. Burial will be in St. Ninian's Cemetery,Antigonish, at a later date.
