Malca GILLSON Obituary
GILLSON, Malca
Peacefully, on Thursday, June 10, 2010, after a long and courageous battle with dementia, with her family by her side. Loving mother to Ruth, grandmother to Sara and mother- in-law to Henry. Born in Yorkton, Saskatchewan, in 1926, Malca was a pioneer for women in the field of documentary film-making. A producer, director, and editor at both the National Film Board of Canada, and her independent production company, Malca worked on over 100 films during her career. She richly deserved her reputation as an excellent director and producer, and as a creative 'fixer' in the editing room. Malca loved the theatre, especially the Stratford Festival, and music. She will be greatly missed by her family and friends. At Benjamin's Park Memorial Chapel, 2401 Steeles Avenue West (3 lights west of Dufferin), for service on Sunday, June 13, 2010 at 11:30 a.m. Interment Holy Blossom Memorial Park. Shiva 483 Merton Street, shiva visits 2:00 to 8:00 p.m., shiva concludes Friday afternoon, June 18th. Many thanks to all the staff at Kensington Gardens residence for their remarkable kindness, caring and professionalism during the past eight years. Your efforts have been extraordinary. In lieu of flowers, a memorial donation to Kensington Gardens, 416-963-9640 or to the Stratford Festival of Canada would be appreciated.
