Malcolm L. HEINS

MALCOLM L. HEINS, LSM May 16, 1950 - May 17, 2022 With great sadness we announce the untimely passing of Malcolm Layton Heins, LSM, having courageously battled cancer since 2018. He is survived by his wife, Jana Konrads; daughter, Kristin; granddaughter, Maeve; siblings, Robert, Duncan, Bronwen and Nicholas and their families, including fifteen nieces and nephews, all of whom he loved deeply. Malcolm had an outstanding career in both law and business. He left a successful civil litigation practice at Thomson Rogers in 1981 for Simcoe Erie Investors, a property casualty insurance group. He became its President before being recruited in 1994 by the Law Society of Ontario to rebuild the Lawyers' Professional Indemnity Company, following a $200-million debt crisis. The profession honoured him for this accomplishment by awarding him The Law Society Medal, its highest honour. In 2001, the Law Society again recruited him as its Chief Executive Officer, a role he held for more than a decade. Following his retirement in 2012, Malcolm served on several Boards of Directors including Cancer Care Ontario, Ontario Municipal Insurance Exchange, Legal Aid Ontario, the Investment Industry Regulatory Organization of Canada and LAWPRO. During his years as a business leader, he inspired and mentored amazingly loyal employees at every organization he led. Malcolm had many life-long friends, including those from his childhood in Ottawa, school, his personal and professional circles. In his personal life, he was passionate for his love of family, golf and skiing. He was also an enthusiastic chef known for treating his family and friends to many gourmet meals, each thoughtfully planned and deliciously executed. When he went out for dinner, invariably the choice of wine fell to him. He travelled all over the world with Jana whom he had adored since their first meeting in 1969 at the University of Toronto. They later attended Dalhousie University where they both completed their law degrees. Malcolm and Jana shared a deep and enduring love as well as many adventures, including regular visits to Italy where they kept a vacation home and tended their olive grove. Malcolm was most proud of his daughter Kristin. They shared a loving nature, bottomless drive and an easy laugh. You could often find them together hiking, running, skiing, golfing or caring for many beloved family dogs over the years. Malcolm considered granddaughter Maeve a high point in his life. Whether cooking, walking to school, skiing, learning to throw a football or swing a golf club, they were happiest together. Malcolm was always delighted to hear Maeve's description of him: "My best friend, Mac". Malcolm credited a capable team at Mount Sinai Hospital with extending his life, affording him five fulfilling years to travel, continue his board work and crucially, spend time with loved ones. Malcolm's passing leaves an enormous hole in the lives of so many. We're thankful for his love, friendship, strength of character and a sense of fun that we carry forward in his honour. Malcolm Heins lived well, loved well and fought hard …our gladiator. We are better for it. The family will welcome guests on July 7 at the Granite Club in Toronto, 2-5 p.m. to celebrate Malcolm's life.
