Jana,
I just learned of Malcolm's passing. I ran into him at Mt. Sinai during one of his visits there and not long after, we shared a glass of wine together and I really thought he had beaten this. We reminisced a bit. I was always happy to run into him over the years after TR and his S&E time and I am lucky to have had him as a friend. As Moe C noted he was truly wonderful gentleman in so many ways. My sincere condolences to you and Kristin (and all the family). Jim

Jana, I was so sorry to hear of this only today. Malcolm was a great colleague for over 40 years. Our paths crossed in many different ways. From TR doing litigation, to S and E which was my greatest client while he was there, to the LSUC while I was President of the Ont Bar Association. We skied together at Mt Tremblant a few years ago following a CBA meeting while I was on the CBA board and Malcolm was consulting for us. I had many social golf games with him at his course near Hamilton and mine in Richmond Hill. He was a truly wonderful gentleman in so many ways. He will be greatly missed.
My deepest sympathy.

Stu and I were very sad to learn the news that Malcolm had passed away. We feel very fortunate to have spent some quality time with Malcolm and Jana this past year. In spite of Malcolms battle with cancer he was always a delight to be with - so engaging, witty and intelligent - always with a smile and an infectious sense of humour. Our friendship started over 40 years ago when our daughters were first born. We will miss him terribly and send hugs and best wishes to Jana, Kristen and Maeve.

Dear Jana,
You may remember me and my late husband, Roman, when we lived at Admiral's Gate, 2006 -2009. I send you my heart-felt sympathy for the loss of the wonderful Malcolm. Reading about your life together was inspiring. You have many very special memories to carry you forward. I know the grief is so hard to bear when one loses your precious love. May the love of your family and friends bring you healing, comfort and peace in the coming days and months. I am living back in Collingwood now and visit with my dear friend Carol-Ann. She told me about Malcolm's passing. My best, Marilyn

I'm still trying to process that I won't get to see Malcolm again......I only learn of his passing at the Admiral's Gate meeting held today, May 28th. Malcolm was admired by all at AG and he was a treasured member of the community. He loved life and his family and he loved lobster! I will never forget his enthusiasm for having our community share a lobsterfest and of course Malcolm had to BBQ his own lobster to perfection! Malcolm was truly amazing and I send a heartfelt hug to Jana, Kristen and Maeve along with the rest of the family.

I was shocked and saddened to hear of Malcolm's passing.
I had the good fortunate and pleasure to meet Malcolm when he was at Simcoe & Erie.
Our friendship expanded when he joined LPIC as we worked to revive a failing company, for which Malcolm had both a vision and a plan. With passion, boundless energy, great insight and amazing leadership, he created one of the leading professional liability insurers on the globe.
Following that success, his skills were not wasted, be it at LSUC or on the various boards to which he dedicated himself.
While I will truly miss our lunches, chats and his "happy dance" on the golf course, I do have wonderful memories of his smile and amazing time together.
Jana, and to all of the Heins family, our deepest condolances.

We met Malcolm and Jana through mutual friends many years ago.
The first thing that comes to mind is the way Malcolm´s whole face lit when he smiled and he smiled a lot.
We applauded his tenacity in making the perfect pizza in his outdoor oven in his mountain home in northern Italy. It took a few tries but he succeeded just like he did with everything else he put his mind to.
He was a lawyer who could fix things, never failing to get Piccolo Perla up and running like a well oiled machine. We were always in awe of that.
A wonderful man taken way too soon.
He will be missed.
Much love,
Nicholas and Susan

My sincere condolences to the family. I had the pleasure of working at the Law Society of Ontario during Malcolm's tenure (where I still work today). He was an outstanding CEO who brought great vision and change to our organization - ever oriented towards excellence in all aspects of self-regulation. He also infused our corporate culture with an enduring respect and appreciation for staff - at all levels. These values are embraced by our current leadership, that so clearly embodies his legacy. Those of us who worked during Malcolm's time here will always remember his bold contribution to this historic and complex organization.

I am very sad to hear of Malcolm's passing. I joined the Lawyers' Professional Indemnity Company (as it then was) in 1996 under Malcolm's inspirational leadership. I recall his boundless energy, focused intelligence and lovely good nature. It was a pleasure to work in an organization with Malcolm at the helm. My sincere condolences to his family and friends.

Reena and I offer our deepest sympathies to Malcolm´s family. I had the privilege of serving in recent years with Malcolm on an Expert Committee that provided advice to the Government of Ontario regarding the Regulation of Financial Advice and Financial Planning. Malcolm Chaired our Committee and he was thoughtful and measured and fair and intelligent and he always had the public interest and the best interests of investors at the forefront of his thinking and analysis. I know that I speak for our other fellow Expert Committee members, Anita Anand and Paul Bates, in saying that Malcolm was in all respects, a true professional. During the course of this work Malcolm and I became friends and I´m sad at his passing and I will miss him. May his memory be a blessing.

Sincere condolences, Jana, to you and your family. You may well not remember me, but think Loudon House, U of T, 1969 and all that....fond and golden times. I have not been close these many years, but have followed Malcolm´s career from afar. I remember him well and always with warmth. He was a sincere but fun guy and the obit captures this essence most beautifully. Again, my sympathies to you and your loved ones.

Malcolm will be sorely missed by all at Admirals Gate. In the warmer weather he was always out on the water paddle boarding or swimming in the pool. We will surely miss our poolside chats with Malcolm. I will miss playing golf with Malcolm at Oslerbrook. I always got a chuckle from the little dance on the green that he would do as his golf ball was hopefully heading for the bottom of the cup.
Our deepest condolences to Jana and the rest of Malcom´s family. God Bless.

I'm very sorry to learn of Malcolm's passing. His leadership of the building of LAWPRO in the late 1990s provided many of us with a uniquely formative experience for our early careers. Malcolm gave weight to every perspective in every discussion he led or joined. His legacy is both in organizations and in people's development.

I met Jana at the YMCA in 1981 and after some time we met Malcolm, and of course, Kristin. We had so many great times together and so many laughs. Malcolm liked to move and was up for anything, even attending my yoga classes or a swing dance night. He loved to cook and his meals were always a gourmet delight. A few times we cooked together and I´m never sure who was the sous-chef. He became proficient at making pizza dough and loved to make pizzas in his terrace in Pigna. I am so glad that we got to spend time in Italy both in Pigna and Umbria.
As a young father he was so devoted to Kristen and then we witnessed the same adoration for Maeve. Of course Jana was his first and life-long true love.
Malcolm has left the world a better place and we were always so proud to call him our friend. He lived a full life, albeit too short. The last moments we shared will forever be in our hearts.

Very sad news indeed. Malcolm was a wonderful CEO of the Law Society of Upper Canada, as it was then, and an even better person - wise, far-sighted, broad-minded, masterfully competent, possessed of unquestioned integrity, all imbued with the common touch. Prior to his being hired, there was talk among the benchers of a search committee until it was pointed out that we could scour the planet and not find a more qualified candidate than the one under our noses presiding over at LawPro. The worst thing about life is that it ends, in Malcolm's case far too soon. Deepest sympathies to Jana, the entire family, and his many, many friends.

My sincere condolences to Malcolm´s family and friends.
Malcolm was an exceptional leader. I knew Malcolm from his time as the CEO of the Law Society. He led the LSO (LSUC) with purpose and vision.
He expected a lot of himself and asked the same of staff. His example made it easy to make the same effort.
Malcolm is gone too soon but with his time, he made a lasting impact.
Malcolm´s family and friends should be proud.
Rest In peace, Malcolm. May your family and friends take solace in your memory and the knowledge of the respect and esteem in which Malcolm was held.

Malcolm had an immeasurable impact on the legal profession - first by rescuing and rehabilitating the insurance fund and then by reinventing the Law Society itself. He was an inspirational leader with a unique clarity of purpose. He was also a funny, exuberant human being. It was my great privilege to work with him. My condolences to all those who loved and admired him.
