Margaret COCKSHUTT Obituary

MARGARET EVELYN COCKSHUTT Margaret Cockshutt "Muggsie" ("Spike") passed away peacefully, on July 9, 2023, at Hazelton Place in her 97th year. Margaret was an educator, librarian, friend, nature lover, cyclist, theatre buff, beloved sister, aunt, and godmother. She studied at St. Hilda's College at the University of Toronto, and went on to pursue a Master's Degree in Library Science with a speciality in Classification Theory. She devoted her entire teaching career to the Faculty of Library and Information Science at U of T. Margaret was born February 27, 1927, to Eric Morton Cockshutt and Kathleen Isobel Buck Cockshutt in Brantford, Ontario. She spent her summers swimming, sailing, canoeing, playing tennis, and revelling in the great outdoors at the family cottage, "Carrying Place," which she loved. Of her canoeing prowess, let it be noted that one Sunday after church, still in her Sunday best, she and a friend decided a quick canoe trip around the bay before lunch would be just the thing. Yes, of course they dumped, but all we heard were gales of her unmistakeable laughter. Always a great lover of the arts, Margaret began a tradition upon her retirement: "14 Plays in 14 Days," with an annual trip to London, England, where she enjoyed both West End offerings as well as more avant-garde fare. Closer to home, she was a regular at Stratford and a generous supporter of many Toronto theatre companies. Aunt Muggsie was devoted to her family: to her brother, Philip; brother, Paul Foster Cockshutt (predeceased); her nieces and nephews, Martha (Bill), Catherine, Eric (Jennifer), Amanda (Doug) and Paul (Alison); as well as a multitude of great-nieces and nephews, Rachel (Bub), John (Elly), Rosie (Collin), Malcolm, Hannah, Will, Maeve and Emmeline. She was the definition of "favourite aunt" – kind, generous, thoughtful, supportive, and always willing to offer helpful advice. The family would like to express their deepest gratitude to Margaret's caregivers, Rose and Estella, at Hazelton Place for their loving care and thoughtfulness. Cremation has taken place, to be followed by a private family service. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to a Charity of Your Choice in Margaret's honour.

I never had the privilege of taking one of Professor Cockshutt's legendary classes in cataloguing and classification, but remember with fondness my time working with her at the Faculty of Information. She had high standards for her students, no more so than for herself, and was respected internationally for her deep knowledge of classification systems and theory. She was a generous mentor to new faculty, a policy and procedure wonk within the school, a steady, reliable advisor to Deans, and a woman of great integrity. I was delighted to be invited as a friend and colleague to her 80th birthday. There I learned first-hand of how much she was loved and respected as "Aunt Muggsie". She spoke so fondly and proudly of her family, of time savoured together, and of the pleasures of the many summer pursuits she relished at the cottage once July arrived and another school year was done. While I knew Margaret best as a colleague, what I will remember most is her sense of humour and infectious laugh. When approaching a difficult concept in classification with a class, she was renowned for exclaiming, "Here's where we separate the women from the girls!" Guaranteed to elicit a laugh, she managed to make something difficult more approachable.
My sincere condolences to her family, friends, colleagues, and legions of former students.

She was my professor at the University of Toronto. Quite simply, we loved her. She was clear, interesting, patient, and amazingly good-humoured. It was obvious that she loved the subject. How lovely to read about her family life in this obituary. May this devoted teacher rest in peace.
