Margaret HARE Obituary

Margaret Ballantine Hare (nee Schram) passed peacefully in her 99th year at the Heart of Hastings Hospice in Madoc on January 25, 2026. Marg was born and raised in Toronto's West End. She frequently visited friends and relatives in the Campbelford/Stirling area in her youth. Her parents would eventually own a business in Menie and build a cottage on Anderson Island. In their retirement, Marg moved to Belleville with her husband, Peter, to be near the cottage. This cottage remains in the family and is a much-loved family property. Graduating from the University of Toronto with a degree in English in 1948, Marg worked as a high school teacher of English, Geography, and Phys Ed. She had a lifelong love of sports, playing competitive basketball and baseball in high school and university. In the 1940s, her basketball team won the Canadian Championship, and she had the opportunity to play baseball at Chicago's Wrigley Field. Marg played tennis and golf throughout her life, winning many tournaments. Marg is predeceased by her husband, Peter Hare, and son Paul David Hare (Nancy). She will be dearly missed by her daughters, Pam and Barb, her grandchildren, Jaime (David) and Christa, great-grandchildren, Isla and Beth, and many loving family members and friends. Thank you to Nancy G. for her wonderful support over the last few years and the Ontario Health at Home staff. There will be a celebration of life held in July of 2026, when Marg will be interred at Burnbrae Cemetery with many generations of her family. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to the Belleville and District University Women's Club. Marg was an active member of the University Women's Club for over 50 years, an organization that provides university/college scholarship funds for local high school students. Donations can be made by contacting CFUW Belleville (Scholarship trust) cfuwbelleville.com or by mailing a cheque payable to CFUW Belleville Scholarship Trust Fund, P.O. Box 20033, Belleville, Ontario K8N 5V1, or to The Heart of Hastings Hospice, in Madoc, (613-473-1880), would also be appreciated. Cremation arrangements entrusted to Steele Funeral Home, Belleville (613-968-2273)
