Margaret MOON Obituary

MARGARET RUTH MOON (Cream)died peacefully at the Elliott Community Centre in Guelph on April 29, 2021 at the age of 93. She was predeceased by her daughter Alison (who died in infancy), husband Alexander (Alec) Moon, and brother Robert (Bob) Cream. She is survived by her three other children and their partners Jim Moon (Tracey Trimble), Richard Moon (Audrey Macklin) and Catherine Moon (Ian Cornett) and her nine grandchildren Emily Moon, Ryland Moon, Sibyl Macfarlane, Ellie Moon, Hope Moon, Adina Macklin, Jack Cornett, Marnie Cornett, and Harris Cornett. Marg was born and raised in Quebec City. She attended Queen's University, beginning her studies in 1944 at the age of 16. She was a member of the varsity tennis and basketball teams, as well as the musical society. At Queen's she met her husband Alec, who was among the many servicemen attending university immediately following WWII. After graduating from Queen's, she attended the Ontario College of Education in Toronto. She then taught physical education and English at Port Credit High School for a few years. She and Alec were married in 1951 and lived in London, ON for 3 years before settling in Guelph. Marg was a lover of music in all its forms. She was a keen amateur pianist and a member of several community choirs. She was a founding member of the Guelph Light Opera Company and often performed in the chorus of the company's musicals. Marg held a number of voluntary positions in the Guelph community. She served on the board (as secretary, vice-president, and later president) of Edward Johnson Music Foundation, which organized the Guelph Spring Festival. Marg was, for many years, a member of the Board of Governors at the University of Guelph. She was also a long-standing member of the Canadian Federation of University Women in Guelph, serving in a variety of capacities, including local President. She was instrumental in the establishment of the Third Age Learning program in Guelph. She was an active member of St. Andrew's Church in Guelph, serving on many church committees. Marg was genuinely interested in other people and a good listener and perhaps for these reasons she had a wide circle of friends throughout her life. She will be missed by friends and family. Thanks to the staff at The Elliott for their wonderful care. Donations can be made in Marg's name to the Guelph Community Foundation: https://www.guelphcf.ca/ForbrDonors/WaystoGive.aspx#donatenow

Dear Jim, Dick, Catherine and family,

We are very sorry to hear of the passing of your mother. Our thoughts and prayers are with you. She was a kind person and a great friend to my mum. She would always ask me what I was up to when I was growing up and she even agreed to be a reference for me when I had no paid work experience other than picking dandelions for my father. I am grateful to have known her and Guelph is a better place thanks to all her service.

Dear Jim, Dick, Catherine and family,

We are very sorry to hear of your mother’s passing. Our thoughts and prayers are with you. Your mum was always friendly and interested in me growing up and she was a kind friend to my mother. Your mum agreed to be a reference for me when I started out looking for a job and had no paid work experience other than gathering dandelions for my father.

She gave so much to the community and Guelph is a better place because of her.

My sincere condolences to you and your whole family, Jim. Your mom was a sweet lady and always treated us with kindness when we were kids. She also gave back to the community in a big way, especially in the music field.

So sorry to hear of your loss. She was a good friend to my mom (Rosalind Wiggs McKee) & Mom was very proud of the fact they’d been friends since they were 5. Mom used to love sharing stories about that “gaggle of girls”.
