I will always remember my aunt as a vibrant, athletic, and very generous individual who embodied the true definition of enjoying life to the fullest - both as a mindset and from a lifestyle perspective.
We first met when I was a young teenager during my parents visit to see Maria and Stan at their home in Winnipeg. We reconnected again when she settled in Vancouver, and I would now visit her with my own teenage son, Cameron, and my wife Deana.
When it came to hosting us, Maria never missed a detail... the first time we drove up to stay with her in Vancouver, I had a bit of trouble locating her apartment. I double parked and started working google while Deana flipped through a paper map for back-up. Unexpectedly, a neatly dressed gentleman knocked on the passenger window of our suv, and to my bewilderment, asked if I was "Mr. Stuchly". His next words to me (he turned out to be the apartment´s concierge) were "Maria is expecting you... please follow me."
As Maria was an avid skier and hiker, when visiting, we typically detoured to Whistler for a few days. Unfortunately, caregiving for my late father combined with covid shut down our visits since 2018. The attached picture (L to R - Maria, our son Cameron, Deana, myself) at Whistler´s Firefly zipline from the summer of 2013 will always be a fond memory of my aunt. Maria was beaming with pride and excitement... we reached speeds of 100km/h on the way down. And we toasted with a nice glass of red wine, her favorite libation, to celebrate the day :=)
