MARIAN GALLIGAN Obituary

(1933 – 2025) Marian died peacefully in her sleep, on October 8, 2025, with family at her side. She is survived by Patrick, her husband of 67 years; her children, Thomas (Kathryn Liptrott), Catherine, Patrick (Brenda Robins) and Shelagh (Geoffrey Farr); her grandchildren, Jack Galligan, Joseph Parker, and Anne and Henry Farr; her sister, Catherine Mahoney; her nephews, Richard and James Mahoney, and Christopher Sherwood; her nieces, Margaret Mahoney and Mary Sharkey; and her dear friends, Jacqui Doran and bridge partner, Joan Boase. Marian was predeceased by her parents, Dr. and Mrs. Delbert S. Hoare; and her brother, Joseph Hoare. Marian was born in Toronto on June 29, 1933. She grew up in Duparquet, Quebec. When she was about to enter her teens, her family moved to Toronto. She completed high school at Loretto Abbey. She graduated from the University of Toronto with a B.Sc. and began working at Visiting Homemakers Association (VHA). After her marriage, on January 25, 1958, she stopped working at VHA and moved to Ottawa with her husband, where her four children were born. She became a devoted and busy mother and wife. In her spare time she took up golf and skiing and became an excellent bridge player. Her family moved to Toronto in 1970. She continued as a "hands on" mother who had the satisfaction of watching each of her children obtain university degrees and achieve professional status. She reestablished contact with VHA where she became a member of its Board of Directors and then its president. She continued to play golf as a member of the Toronto Ladies Golf Club, to ski as a member of Craigleith Ski Club, and to play bridge as a member of the Monday Club. She enjoyed travelling with Patrick and her children. Probably the most memorable to her of her travels were the bridge trips hosted by Barbara Seagram and Patti Lee. Marian's happy and productive life took a turn when she collapsed at home in September 2023. She was treated at NYGH and Baycrest Hospital. She then became a resident of the Isabel and Arthur Meighen Manor, where she received compassionate care and support for the remainder of her days. The family would like to thank Marian's family doctors, W.R. Fox and Fadie Amin, for their care and support over many years. A Funeral Mass will be said for Marian at St. Gabriel's Passionist Parish Church, 650 Sheppard Avenue East, on Friday, November 21, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. It will be followed by a reception in the Village Hall at St. Gabriel Village, 660 Sheppard Avenue East.
