Mardi, aka “Mrs. Anderson blessed my life the day she stood at our shared Springbank Ave garden fence and introduced me to my life long and precious friend Mimi. We were 2 years old . Mardi provided us with a red wooden sand box for summers and skating rink for winters . Every morning Mardi’s boiled brown egg, freshly baked bread and squeezed orange juice was my delight . She had a kitchen the size of a pantry , her choice , and produced a daily feast of butter tarts , raspberry tarts, date squares and loaves for church and neighbours . One day my mum wasn’t well and Mardi baked her a pumpkin pie ! Such spirit!! Mardi was such a delight I spent every day after school in her home with Mimi and Howie and became such a household fixture that the cottage and Kew Beach Sunday school trips became further extended invitations to share with my adopted bluff side family . Mardi was a legend ! She could whip up gorgeous dresses for Mimi, create east coast paintings using sand sometimes , and boasted a garden of brightly coloured purple and white petunias row upon row. She was a no nonsense east coast girl . Smart, witty and sensible! She had a tender heart for children and a capable and endearing attitude . Every September on the first day of school Mardi would be armed with her camera eager to take photos of her children! Birthdays were celebrated in style and “Welcome Home” banners spread across the garage door awaited her children when they returned from summer camp. Mardi valued family and home and her house was impeccable although she would openly confess she did not like to dust :) She taught me to care for others, to love cooking, and to be generous . I will always love and honour that woman I called “Mrs. Anderson”! ♥
