Marjorie DAVIS Obituary



DAVIS, Marjorie I. M.D.F.R.C.S.(c)
At her residence in Toronto on Saturday, May 18, 2002. Born at Franktown, Ontario, daughter of the late Robert and Jessie Davis. Dr. Davis attended high school in Carleton Place, Ontario and the University of Toronto, graduating in Medicine in 1935. Dr. Davis spent six years in post graduate work at hospitals in Toronto and at Bellevue Hospital in New York City, ending her surgical training with Dr. W.E. Gallie in 1942. She was a clinical teacher at the University of Toronto from 1943-1946 and obtained her Fellowship in the Royal College of Surgeons in 1947. She joined the staff of Women's College Hospital and became Associate Chief of Surgery in 1950 and Surgeon-in-Chief in 1966 upon the retirement of Dr. Jessie Gray. At this time, she was Associate Professor of Surgery and carried on her teaching and private practice. She retired as Surgeon-in-Chief of Women's College Hospital after ten years, and from private practice a year later. She became Professor Emeritus in 1981. She was a member of the Gallie Club and Ladies Golf Club of Toronto. Dr. Davis is survived by her cousins Jean MacMillan, Hugh Carmichael, Faye Fisher and Roy MacOnacbie. She is also survived by Della Smith, a long-time employee, friend and, in Dr. Davis's later years, caregiver extraordinaire. A Memorial Service will be held at TIMOTHY EATON MEMORIAL CHURCH, EAST CHAPEL, 230 St. Clair Avenue West, on Tuesday, May 28 at 11 o'clock.
